Why are people fussing with alliances?

Before you say "shut up, mob up first"
I just need this question answered: why are people cowering into alliances? I don't see the point. They're not making war with other alliances they are just trying to help the newbies. That isn't an alliance that's just protection.

I joined an alliance for the sole purpose of enhancing my gameplay. And yes alliances fight wars. Just not every day

I've joined alliances only when at war.
