But I honestly don't understand crowd funding! Can someone try and explain this to me? I completely understand why the person who is looking for the money goes to these sites but why would you even be on a site like this on the contributing end. I.E. Why would I go to a site where I I would have to look to randomly give someone money? There's no benefit to me as a contributor that I can see. Am I missing something?

Plenty of people walk straight past people collecting for charity at the shops or close the door on door knockers.
Donating to something on the Internet let's you share your good deed with family, friends, and people you haven't spoken to in years, so you can bask in your own smug "in better than everyone" attitude.
But, if someone being a smug tosser on facebook gets someone else money they need then win win I suppose.

There are some movies and other things that have come to fruition from crowdfunding. It's pretty popular in the video game industry. Then what happens is if the game gets made you get a copy of it thanks to your funding. Game devs are able to get a game made that triple A companies might not take a chance on.

People don't go on the site to browse around and look for people to give to. The point of the crowdfunding site is to make the donations quick and easy (and regulation-free and tax free, and oversight free) AFTER you've heard about the need through other means. (word of mouth, email, text, or other social media posting)
