Because some people don't like airports, and Iceland is historically isolated in this game. The only way you were able to get there was by actually going there, so only a few players were there.
When they added the Iceland Airport, many players within the community decided that no one should be able to use it.

I think saba is handling admission visas. To get in though, you have to be a subscriber to her blog; "The feats of saba" or is it "the feets of saba"... Idk I forget. 😕

Asides from keeping attackers farther away from strategic points, you're absolutely correct. 80% of airports run the same situation.
