Home Brew
Forums › General Discussion › Home Brew-
my wifey bought me a home beer brew kit, for my birthday in November. My first run is a Hefeweizen (one of my favorite types of beer). I'll just say it's drinkable, not terrible. Next batch I will start on Sunday which will be a bohemian Czech Pilsner. Any of yall home brew? This kit is the Mr. Beer Kit, definitely amateur, but good starting beer kit I think.

I home brew often. Mr.beer gets u started. Before u know it. You'll have multiple 5 gallon buckets brewing. Lol
-
We moved over to wine, it takes longer and makes better gifts. With wine u can forget it and not have any problems.
-
With beer, when u bottle it. I put in a little less sugar to ensure I don't wake up to exploding bottles. And make sure the bottles are extra tight. Get the bigger bottles with a flip top. Easyer to seal and less likely to explode. Have fun and brew on! It's fun to try different types of beer. Mr.beer is good for darker beers because it's east to keep in the fridge.

I didn't realize there were home wine kits. I definitely need to do more runs.

The kit recommended two of those carbonating tabs, with the hefe, I think only one is needed. I didn't see a recommendation to add more sugar. Its a good start. Mr Beer was what got me started into brewing 5 gallon batches. I would look up forums about proper fermentation time for your style of beer. I always went with an extra week in the fermenter and produced better tastung results. Don't take sanitation for granted. Wash and sanyize thoroughly.

Move up into a moonshine kit

I home brewed for about 5 years. I gave up the hobby over the summer though. Had a whole room for fermenting, bottling etc... It was nice.

Are there test strips to test the alchohol content?
-
No you use a hydrometer to measure specific gravity. The difference between your original gravity and your final gravity is your alcohol content.
-
There is a tool you can use to measure the "gravity" with in fact measures the sugars and a simple equation will give you an a proximate alcohol % also try an English nut brown ale recipe but replace to water with Apple juice that has been boiled (to kill any yeast in juice) and a little cinnamon, that makes a nice beer. And it's even not bad a little warm. Strong through from the extra sugars in the juice.

You think you're hot shit, but you're really just cold diarrhea.
