DNA Hard Drive
Forums › General Discussion › DNA Hard Drive-
I came across an article about a group of scientists who were trying to figure out whether the double-helix molecules that encode every plant, animal, and microbe on Earth can be used to preserve our data for thousands of years. The research team managed to encode DNA with 83kb of text from the Swiss Federal Charter from 1291 and the Method of Archimedes from the 10th century.
Today, a hard drive the size of a small book might back up roughly 5 terabytes of data, and the drives components may last about 50 years. Meanwhile, a microscopic droplet of DNA could store more than 300,000 terabytes of information and can survive for hundreds to thousands of years.

The research team packed DNA into tiny, heat-resistant silica spheres. After baking them at 160 degrees for a week- the equivalent of keeping them at 50 degrees for 2,000 years - the DNA inside was still error free. If kept in cold storage, one of these capsules might end up lasting tens of thousands, perhaps even millions of years.
This is amazing stuff.

If you were enlightened 2 years ago you should have made a thread about it. But you didn't. Which is why I did. 😆Somebody doesn't watch Game Theory. MatPat did a video that included this a year or two ago
