If you go through the help screen, it now clearly states it adds an absolute value, not per mob member. Buying one tommy gun will increase your attack by 4 (over lapuas).

Adding 1 fully equipped member to your mob will add 31 to your attack (and 36 to defense).

So no, not worthless. Worth about the same as 8 new mob members, if you maxed both.
