Me and my best friend have decided that we want to either join the marines or army together. What are some of the benefits and disadvantages to both? I'm 5'8 200 Ibs and I run a 6 min mile and a 5 flat 40. He is 5'10 165 Ibs runs a 6 min mile and a 5.3 40. Would we be able to do basic training?

Can't speak for the marines but having served in the army I can tell you you'll both do fine as far as running goes. How are you at push-ups and sit-ups? It's been 15 years since I was in basic training but (assuming you're in your early 20's) you have almost 16 minutes to run 2 miles before you graduate basic. That was my problem area so that's the only one I remember. As for the other 2 areas, you have two minutes but I'm afraid I don't remember how many you have to do. That's assuming things haven't changed too much since my time....
-
I think the minimum would be 51 push ups and 60 sit ups in 2 minutes.
-
Hmm. I was thinking it was lower than that but like I said, it's been 15 years.
-
20 y/o male needs to do 42 push ups (minimum) and 53 sit ups (minimum) to pass.
-
Usmc (ooh-rah). PFT Mimimums for young males (17-23 y.o.) when i was in were 3 miles in 21 minutes, 3 pull up, and 40 sit-ups in 2 minutes. But three minimums is still a fail as there is an overall score that needs to be higher. Boot camp will get you into shape to pass.

Google "U.S. Marine physical fitness test" or U.S. Army or any of the others. They have the requirements by age, as well as the weight requirements. You'll both be very near the top with those numbers. When I was in the Army an 11:54 maxed the 2 mile run, 82 maxed push-ups and 77 maxed sit-ups.
You are probably fit enough to get into some of the elite schools, if you are looking at things like Rangers or Airborne combat-related occupational specialties.
You will also be required to do certain "forced marches" with packs, again look online, but if I recall Air Assault school had a 12 mile march up and down hills with 40(?) pounds minimum in 3 hours, pass/fail.

Physical Training isn't likely to be any problem for you, but are you stupid? You should take the ASVAB, and look online at what the minimum scores are per branch. Also, certain obstacles, ie. if you are deathly afraid of heights, or have a problem with someone getting in your face, you won't like it. Watch "full metal jacket", while they aren't allowed to abuse Privates as much anymore, if you couldn't handle Gunnery Sergeant Hartman bitching at you like that, forget it.
If you do well on the ASVAB, and the PT, talk to recruiters rom both services. There are various incentives recruiters can offer (but prefer not to) such as a specific duty station, extra college fund money, and you may qualify for some officer candidate programs.
Don't just walk in and say "I wanna join", get both sets of recruiters competing for you.
Oh, you should have a high school diploma, a clean criminal record and be able to pass a drug test. There are waivers for GED's and minor crimes, but you won't be offered incentives.

If y'all wanna stick together the army has a buddie system that will keep y'all together u till after the first tour. Marines do the same but it's only till boot camp. With one of me brothers in marines he doesn't have a say really where is going, just given and option and not many options stay in the US most or out of country where he could possible be based. I recommend one of those too but don't have a lot of jobs when getting out like Air Force. Navy my step dad said you must be a really good swimmer and take a lot of noise or but a chicken shit that sits in the command center or flys drones lol. All depends on what you feel. Personally if I had someone to go with it would be army because going with someone and having the chance to stick with them is awesome. That's someone you can talk to about whatever happens overseas that you don't feel comfortable talking to someone you barely know.
-
Lol I'm good not on drugs. Not afraid of heights either. No one can get in my face like my dad can so fine there aswell. You guys are very helpful some of those basics I know I can do some already.
-
I was worried about the running but it seems it won't be that hard if it's like you make it out to be.
-
Glad you can run fast....can you shoot strait? That's what really matters. ;). Good luck and you have my total support and respect Dimo!

My brother was in the army. He survived a helicopter crash, survived a bomb blast, nearly drowned, we temporarily blind in one eye but ce out good and has a really good police career built upon that time.

From what I remember of the Navy, abusing privates was one of the only things to do on deployment, and to my knowledge, there was never any official restriction on how much you were allowed to do it.Watch "full metal jacket", while they aren't allowed to abuse Privates as much anymore, if you couldn't handle Gunnery Sergeant Hartman bitching at you like that, forget it.
Drill Instructors can't physically hit basic trainees anymore. They could during the time Full Metal Jacket was set.

How old are y'all? Cause 200lbs at 5'8 you have to be either a total lard or muscular as hell (and judging by your 6 min mile I'm going to guess the latter) like no creepo but I want to see a picture of your body before I believe that lol. I'm 6ft 180 tip top shape and can only run 6:30 minute miles. I gotta call bs purely out of jealousy on that mile timeI'm 5'8 200 Ibs and I run a 6 min mile and a 5 flat 40. If you want to be a soldier, Army Paratrooper. If you want to be a grunt Marines. If you want a career afterwards, the Army provides better opportunities than the Marines, but the Navy and Air Force are better for after service careers.

i went to the army's basic training two years ago. before going, my recruiter told me straight up "basic is the easiest thing ull do in the army" and i completely agree (though my army experience is quite limited). as a linebacker with that mile time, ull have no trouble with the workouts or the smoking sessions (if u can even call it that anymore, they didnt ever last longer than 15 minutes). literally just do what ur told and ull be fine. sure ull have to deal with getting smoked for other people's mistakes but thats just how it goes.
dont know much about the marines, i just heard their pt test and basic training are both more physically demanding than the army. but just get a complete picture of what each has to offer and the potential jobs ud have in either branch and ultimately what ur really getting into before signing on the dotted line 👍

It is kinda surprising me how much people are saying a six minute mile is good, over half my school probably gets anywhere between 4:30-7:00
-
USAF when I was in you had to run 3 miles in 18 minutes. Basic training was 6 weeks, might still be. You run every day, so come week 5 when you take the test the run is easy. It was the push ups that got guys recycled. Every branch has their perks. USAF has the shortest basic training and were highest paid when I did my time. You have to ask yourself what do you want to get out of your military expierence and go from there. Me I was a stupid stoner and friends of mine were getting locked up. I had to get away or I would've ended up on the same path. The USAF offered me the highest enlistment bonus. So off I went.
