Thinking about joining military any advice?
Forums › General Discussion › Thinking about joining military any advice?-
👆 10-15 years ago I would disagree with you. Today I would advise against joining the military unless you really have a passion for it. With the rate at which they are downsizing, they are so eager to screw you over just to either kick you out or at best not retain you. Just look at the VA. It's criminal how that system operates. Politicians couldn't care less about our sacrifice. The wars we fight are pointless. At no time have I ever felt I was defending my country in my three tours in Afghanistan. We haven't even made a real difference in that country let alone our own.

No risk of getting killed. Don't have to leave your family.
Anyway, I am nobody is very true to what is said. It can offer so much but you have to walk in with what YOU have in mind. It's very good to have someone who is currently in the military or has had past experience to be in there with you.

How do you know it's a bad move? Sometimes it can be(very rarely) but everyone I know(even myself) who have joined the military have had a wonderful time. I have been able to get a wonderful job because of my MOS I held because of it, I have met a lot of good people who have helped spread the word that I need the job,(and actually get me a great paying job in 2 weeks) and also it gave me a goal to reach in. It's not all send em all to Iraq or the middle of the desert and constantly get shot after basic.

Anyway to bounce back to your consern of me contradicting myself This is what I was agreeing with if you actually read my comment instead of assuming.

The most important decision you'll make joining the military will be choosing your MOS (Military Occupational Specialty). Many of these can give you experience you can use outside in the civilian world. Many recruiters are liars and will try to shove you into one to meet their quotas. Do your research and know what you want to do for a career and demand what you want in a contract. If they try to steer you into anything you don't want, and saying you'll get it after Basic Training, walk out the door and find another recruiter. Always think of it as a career rather than an adventure. -
Listen speaking as a Brit. I would say to any youngster thinking of going into the army (any military) to stay well clear.
why put your life at risk by getting sent to the Middle East or where ever the pompous prats that run our country decide to invade next
it might be a good career move if it was just a career , but it ain't No matter how you paint the perfect picture you are one step away from killing or being killed.
the forces are for war simple as that. -
I did four years in the Marine Corp. The recruiters all lie. I will never regret joining, best days of my life. Except for the whole Iraq thing. Which i spent a lot of time in. If i had to do it all over. I would join the AirForce. It's like college all over again. They have the best equipment out of all the branches. As far as civilian life after your years, good luck. When I transferred, i was told that none of my qualifications met civilian job criteria. So back it up with college while your in. Good Luck

I've been in the air force 11 years...if its travel you want, sign up for a flightcrew position. I highly recommend either boom operator or loadmaster and don't let the recruiter tell you otherwise. And don't listen to people saying "chair force" or knocking the AF. They're just jealous people like me get paid an extra 100$ a day per diem to stay in 5 star hotels in awesome locations lol

I love the air force! They used to let me ride in their fancy flying machines. Then one of their guys would open the door and let us jump out, then once on the ground we would do real Army shit. And as far as Army or Marines, it doesn't matter which you are if you are a leg. Real soldiers, marines and even a few navy and air force dudes all have wings on their chest.

Thank you Mr. Armchair. Someday when you grow a pair, you might understand how the military can be an excellent path to growing up, learning teamwork, responsibility, leadership, going to college, and busting out ahead of the pack in the civilian world when you get back. I used to be afraid, too.Listen speaking as a Brit. I would say to any youngster thinking of going into the army (any military) to stay well clear.

Speaking of the Air Farce and Airborne: a few years ago I almost switched to the Air Force from the Army. (Shameful I know). The slot I wanted was in a unit that flew around in C-130's and did translations in Afghanistan. As a Dari linguist of 8 years at the time I wanted an opportunity to use my language skills more often than I had previously. I sat down with the E-9 in charge of the unit and he told me I was a shoe in but wanted to warn me I would be joing an Airborne unit. Ignorantly thinking Airborne meant the same thing in the Air Force as I did in the Army I said "well I'm already Airborne qualified so that should be easy." He told me rather it meant their unit flies around and gets shot at and wanted to make sure I was okay with that. To make sure I clarified that they got shot at from 20,000 some feet and were shot at by the Taliban?

He confirmed and said not everyone can handle that kind of stress. Having recently deployed to Kunar and Nuristan with the 173rd with a unit that took 80% casualties I couldn't believe his nerve and got up and walked out.
