I've been here since '85. It wasn't something I thought of as being very important until I got older. I've done a ton of travelling around the world over the past few years and i realized that what we have here compared to other countries is not something you should take lightly or for granted. Not going to lie; singing the star spangled banner for the first time with meaning got me a little choked up.

Do you get to keep your Canadian citizenship? I know people with duel citizenship but it may be because one parent is US and other is Israeli. Just saying I love the USA but if the zombie apocalypse comes I'm heading north!! 👍🐢 🇺🇸😎🏃🏃🏃
Technically, the ceremony dictates that I renounce all allegiances to prior sovereigns. With that being said, yes, I still can keep my Canadian passport and citizenship in the eyes of Canada.

If a US Citizen were to become a citizen of another country, the US would still regard him/her as a US citizen. Unless, he/she were to go to a US embassy and renounce their citizenship.

Ive always considered Canadians to be pretty much Americans anyways. Maybe just less rednecks in Canada. I grew up in Detroit and crossing the border South in to Canada was something I did frequently and never really thought twice about. Well, at least until they made a huge fuss after 911. The only thing I ever thought different about Canada is that the money was colored funny.
-
I'd be interested to know your thoughts on the differences between the two. Being a 'born' American, I've not so recently found far greater liberty elsewhere, as it fits my life anyway. I am pretty sure I won't renounce my citizenship (despite America's 'tax you everywhere you live' methodology that taxes me 5 figs per year) but I am kind of struggling to find a reason to remain a citizen, aside from basic fiduciary concerns. What say you sir?

Congratulations!

Like I said, I’ve been in the States since the 80’s. I’ve been doing quite a bit of travel over the past few years and never thought of it too much being a resident alien. It was by stroke of luck that it came about while I was in Honduras. I was living down there for a little under 6 months, planning my trip home, while also planning my next trip, and thinking about where I wanted to go. My RA card was set to expire soon so I was looking online to see about the options of renewing while abroad.
-
It was through this search that I discovered a little clause in being a resident alien that the U.S. takes the term “resident” quite literal. Turns out that I would have inadvertently renounced my residency if I traveled outside the US for more than 6 months in one 12 month period. If an immigration official had decided to act upon that, I would have had to apply for residency all over again. (Something that is a serious pain in the ass, if you ask anyone). I own a few properties here, have worked my entire adult life here, and the majority of my social sphere is in the US. I realized then it was more important for me to be able to BE in the U.S. than to just LEAVE the U.S. at any given time.
-
I’ve heard about the “tax you wherever you live” argument, but don’t find that to be the case for everyone. From my understanding, if you’re earning foreign income, you are required to claim what you earn to the Feds, but that doesn’t mean you automatically pay U.S. taxes on it. I believe it depends on HOW you earn your income. Being in the mortgage biz, I have reviewed US citizen’s tax returns that have reported foreign income, but have no tax liability on it. It sound though that you may have a different personal experience?

As for being an American versus being a Canadian, I’ve spent my formative years growing up in the US, so my knowledge growing up comparing the two are limited. With that being said, it is my belief that the metric system is superior to that of the imperial system; that the “Check and Balances” of a Presidential system is better than that of a Parliamentary system (how many times has the Canadian Parliament been dissolved); that hockey is still superior to either baseball or football; and, that no country has been able to create a nationalistic comic book hero that kicks as much ass as Captain America :)

I'm Canadian and yes the gipper is Canadian for life he's is a great guy I'm sure but he should lose his Canadian citizenship he still gets free medical and if he gets into legal trouble will bring him back etc...
We should do it like almost all other countries if you change citizenship you lose Canadian passport. We have 100,000 of thousands of passports out lots of people taking advantage of it -

ie, for voting you are either a citizen or not. Citizens can vote non citizens cannot.
Or
For entry into the US. US citizens have right of return. LPRs also can renter, except under limited specific circumstance, in those cases they get a hearing before an immigration court. All others must fall into an immigrant or nonimmigrant category to enter. -
Woo Hoo! Congrats! Let's go to the firing range and shoot some guns!
Seriously, though, all the stuff you had to learn to do that, I'd guess most Americans don't even know. That's worth celebrating! Glad to have ya!
Congrats again!!
