I did some training with the shock knife as part of my defense against edged weapons training. That thing was wicked!

I don't think martial arts can make you tough, I think you have to have the fight in you

That's definitely true. I know plenty if people that I've done some no gi gracie tournaments against that were definitely better trained than I am but they weren't as aggressive as I was and I ended up winning.I don't think martial arts can make you tough, I think you have to have the fight in you

I owned an Asian painting once. Bruce Lee on black velvet. It was art to me.

I taught Tae-Kwan-Do and Judo in the inner city for 3 years. A few weeks into teaching, I was taking out a stained mat for disposal in the back alley and I saw two kids (they really weren't that much younger than me at the time) going at it in the alleyway. I grabbed them by the collars and took them inside and taught them Judo and both went on to further their skills, enter tourneys, and both won regionals in altering years and both came close to national titles. They were tough anyway, but they needed discipline and structure. That's why I want to introduce martial arts to kids in the ghetto. They do need a proper instructor, one well versed in technique and control, because some people can't teach both.I don't think martial arts can make you tough, I think you have to have the fight in you

Love this post. I know kids whose lives were turned around w/capoeira, but no doubt most martial arts would work as they require incredible focus.Papillon wrote:

Yer Chaos Ronin, I never had my own Dojo but would teach quite a lot as my instructor branched out.The guys who could fight (naturally) became very good and I agree they got discipline and respect brought into there lives.
Far to many clubs now treat it as an exercise than a martial art. I see guys with black belts who couldn't beat an egg.
Parents bring there children to lessons because they are getting bullied etc, but unless the fight is already in them there's not much help you can do -
