I'm gonna get a new BBQ here's the question. I prefer an oldskool charcoal heated oil drum style one mrs dc wants a new gas powered one. Any advice on the difference?

Doesn't matter. She's in charge and your getting the one she wants.

  😂😂😂 happy wife, happy life.

lol, I think the BBQ is one of the minor battles I may win

Charcoal gives way better favour to meat, gas is faster, however , a smoker box on a gas BBQ helps.

The convenience of gas far outweighs the flavor benefits. You will learn to season and flavor as needed. Plus you can control the heat and have easy clean up.

  Drum charcoal the bomb 👍👍👍👍

If the flavor means that much to you, tell her you will get the gas, if you can get a smoker. As it isn't cost effective, she most likely will go with the charcoal.

I prefer gas because I'm a lazy SOB. Also, BBQ is a food where I'm from. You cook on a grill! 😜

Who cooks the meat? Normally it's the blokes who control cooking duties at barbies therefore get what you want! Lol

  Get one with both.

Get charcoal, if it's taking too long just finish it off in the grill that's in the kitchen, then you get both flavour and speed 👍

  Easy way- Gas
 Best way- Charcoal
 Flavorful way- Smoker

First off - do you want to BBQ or do you want to grill your food? Those are not interchangeable terms.
If you want to grill (high, direct heat, short cooking time), a gas grill works great and is much easier. If you want to BBQ (low, indirect heat, long cooking time), you want a smoker. Charcoal tastes great for grilling, but it's much harder to control the temp and it takes much longer to prepare. You can half-ass BBQ with a charcoal drum, but it's hard to control the temp and harder still to keep it at a constant temp for the hours needed to BBQ.

Easy solve. Get the style where half is gas and half is charcoal. Charcoal is way better, but I understand the convience of gas. Happy grilling/happy bbq'ing.

No need for discussions, charcoal all the way.

Smokers are the best invention in the whole damn world. My first paycheck I got while working for a shoe factory in the late 90's was used to buy a smoker. That reminds me, I need to pick up some wood chips. What do you guys suggest in terms of wood chips. I've tried most, but I want to experiment with mixing and/ or new types.

Smokers are awesome. If you're thinking about getting a gas grill, you might as well grill inside your kitchen. ;-P
