The VA has been a disaster for years. I expect little improvement, if the VA was going to change why didn't it improve after the Walter Reed fiasco a few years ago. I also expect all the problems you listed in the VA will become endemic in a, single payer or nationalized health care system.✂️The problem is not with the method of healthcare delivery, it is the constant underfunding by congress and these ridiculous VA manager bonuses based on turnover instead of outcome and quality of care. The good news is that the VA is a government entity and answerable to the taxpayers, not a board of directors and shareholders. This can be fixed if congress could just focus on something other than Benghazi for five minutes. Trading in an accountable system for an unaccountable one via privatization is not the answer.

Aussies pay a % of income to our government healthcare fund Medicare. This then picks up the major costs of public hospitals and services, and some of the costs of other healthcare. There are all sorts of controls and safety nets to better protect lower income families and pensioners.
But our new conservative government is trying to destroy universal healthcare buy adding a "co payment" to doctors visits. My doctor charges $75 for a ten minute consult. I get $35 back from Medicare, so I'm $40 out of pocket. Now I'll have to pay another $7 on top, an increase of 17.5%, just because the government said so. Pensioners might be paying nothing at the moment, but will also have to stump up the $7. For them that's the difference between eating a decent meal, or eating cat foot to save some money.

But even if this gets passed into law, I'll be sticking with the Oz system. It works well for most people, despite the Tory's best efforts.

Make sure you get out the vote. I think across the board, progressives biggest problem is they think their vote doesn't matter which is completely asinine. I know in our country liberals make up the large majority. But they just don't vote. I think it's 35% of the population in off season elections and 50-55% during presidential elections that vote. Maverick has mentioned the same conservatives are trying to take the reigns in Canada. Another problem is liberals become lax, and think what's working will stay in play, you know because it works for everyone rather than the few. Gotta remember though, monied interests are always always trying to move their arses back in.

The good news is the VA has to answer to taxpayers and not a board of directors so they'll be held accountable???? Like the IRS and State department? The FBI and ATF? Yea, were really holding their feet to the fire huh? I think making a profit off each young man and woman we send through the meat grinder is better than letting them die from lack of healthcare like were doing now. And the copay went up? Imagine that. When less healthy people are paying into the system, prices tend to go up. What else was brought up.... Allowing people with pre existing conditions is a sham. It forces the others peoples cost up or the insurance companies just charge an insane amount for those people. That really won. I'll check back in a day and see what else has been brought up.

Actually those companies typically return profits to customers or stakeholders in the form of dividends or lower prices. Officers of the company earn their pay, raises and bonuses for their ability to innovate and thus generate profits. Many if not most true non-profits exist only to distribute assets and rarely do a whole lot of innovation.....unless it's fundraising. They innovate a lot there.✯RagnarLoðbrók✯ wrote:
Profit isn't the only driver of innovation. It is, however, the weakest driver of innovation. Non-profits innovate as much as, and in many cases, more than for-profit business models. And monopolies are just as capable as innovation. Government set monopolies such as utility companies also happen to be non-profits in many cases....Profit also drives innovation.

And Ragnar is right. It's only in textbooks that profit is the weakest driver of innovation. Of course profit can't only be denoted in the short term or the form of cash.

Just FYI you're replying to an Australian there who doesn't have for-profit healthcare. Yet. Doesn't really apply to the model you have in your head. Pay attention. ;)than letting them die from lack of healthcare like were doing now. And the copay went up? Imagine that. When less healthy people are paying into the system, prices tend to go up.
