Don't play with a pick. When you get more advanced, a pick will just hinder you in some of the more complex songs
Also, try just going on bassmasta.com and looking up some of your favorite songs. Most songs have been tabbed on there

I'll be honest, I have only been playing about 22 years and I am self-taught and the best advice I can give you is do exercises to increase your manual dexterity (I don't play with a pick), listen to music with great bassists and develop your ear by picking their bass lines apart (I learned alot from Steve Harris, Geddy Lee, Flea, Tony Levin, Jaco Pastorius, etc), and find all of the instructional vids that you can find from Jaco Pastorius and watch em....learn em....live em. DON'T limit yourself to one style of music but rather open your mind to ALL types.....you don't have to like them....just learn from them. I've played everything from blues to death metal, tejano to funk and have enjoyed every minute of it. You've picked a great instrument to learn and don't let anyone tell you the limits of its place in music.....re-invent it to your liking and create your own style. Good luck and have fun on your musical journey. 😺

I started with a teacher but I think I'll self teach myself next year, cause it's like 600$ for a half hour per week, not involving the vacations... Thanks anyways :) btw, how often do you practice? I realize daily is a must, but for how long? Oh and also i have a very bad ear (as in a think they're playing a B but it's a C) so is learning by ear a must?😺

I play with a pick because I started on regular guitar. If I could do it over again I would force myself to use my fingers. However some of the music I play now is so fast I can't imagine being able to play w my fingers.. Also, when u join a band. Practice locking in w your drummer. You guys are the backbone and great chemistry is essential

maxx wonderful advice. I like your nods to tony levin and geddy lee.
I play but am not any good due to lack of dedication. I dabble for fun with many instruments but have been taking lessons on one thing or another since age 6.

Oracle says : Tune before play

For good bass visuals check out Tal Wilkenfeld..best looking bass player ever. For skill choose Stanley Clarke. Then forget that and just keep time, play simple and your bandmates won't kick you out..

Nah. It's not a must. Just learn how to read music, and also just practice daily for maybe 30 mins!Mad Maxx🌇🌊🔨 wrote:
