The books and the TV series are pretty much lined up. I myself am pretty behind on the books. If I recall from the books, book 4 is crap. They only focus on one storyline, because Martin was trying to seperate his characters. One half is in 4, the second is in 5. I can't remember why I hated it, but 4 blew.
