Overtime pay?
Forums › General Discussion › Overtime pay?-
HR degree here .. It was explained right earlier that there's 2 classifications of workers. Exempt and non-exempt and each job description has to be analyzed against a set of criteria to determine which class they go into. An exempt employee who earns no overtime the law defines their workweek as working the amount of hours needed to fulfill their job duties in short. It's not defined as "40 hours". As stated earlier you can work 30 hours and not be docked if your works done but work 50 hours if needed to finish your responsibilities. Some employers have comp time they offer to offset any hours over 40 for exempt but it's not required that's a perk that would be added. I don't think you would find many exempt employees go back to non-exempt just to earn OT pay. I personally like having the ability to come and go as needed at work being an exempt employee.

There's a trade off for sure. It's all a matter of opinion what's more important to you personally. As far as the new law brewing it will hurt smaller businesses the most and non-profit orgs who barely get by as it is. I'm not a fan of the new law I think they are compensating for the bad apples out there versus those who try and treat their employees right.

That's one of the many reasons Unions are a good thing. I get over time after 8 hours and double time after 10 hours, Saturdays are OT an after 8 is double and Sundays are all double. The reason overtime was created was to defer companies from working their employees to much and a employee could have some family time. If the employer wanted to work there was a penalty to do so and that was the increase in pay

Everyone seems to forget about correctional officers. I made 11.00 an hour as a CO working in the seg unit of a max security prison. I've had poop thrown on me, I've been shot at with homemade crossbows, and I've had my family threatened. If anybody deserves more money, it's the guy protecting you from the monsters in the prisons.Fed/local government? Utilities ? Depends on application. Cops in Vegas are highly paid and so are school janitors..
There's a good topic. If anyone where to deserve higher pay or overtime it's teachers. They put up with a bunch of crap from the kids and their unions, usually. My mom retired from school district. I know Vegas schools are among the worst in nation but come on.. -

For every reason you give that unions are good I'll up your ante with a bad lol while I believe unions were originally formed to protect the employee from employer abuses if you will they have seemingly caused many companies to tank due to ridiculous demands for employees and excessively high wages as one example. And unions are great for those who are tenured in the union but I bet if you ask a bunch of the small fishes in the union how they feel their treatment is it would be scored much lowerThat's one of the many reasons Unions are a good thing.
