A chat with mystery:
By: Mrs VWtechI had the pleasure of interviewing one of the players that I have admired since I started playing TW. Let's get to know Mystery!!
MVW: So, what made you download this highly addictive game?
Mystery: I had been playing some other mafia type games-like Storm8 games. I was also reviewing games for an app called Chomp. (Chomp isn't around anymore.) I was just searching for similar games to review and stumbled upon Turf Wars.
MVW: How long have you been playing?
Mystery: It will be four years on March 5th.
-
MVW: Congrats! Did you ever think you would be where you are in the game today?
Mystery: I didn't really have any expectations. I certainly couldn't have forseen how addictive it would be. Lol.
MVW: Very true! I didn't believe it when I started playing, even after watching VW be sucked in! When you did start, what were your goals? (not knowing how much the game would expand over time)
-
Mystery: My initial goal was to be #1 on the mob leader board. Back then 3k was the very top. I made it as high as #2 & heard I got close enough to make Mickey Dunn sweat. My first mistake though was to take a little break after I hit 2k mob. Then after war & being sick a few times, I ended up falling back a few slots. :( The only way anyone rises this high up is if someone above them misses enough codes. My other goal...was to have 100 capos. That's Night's fault, lol. I talking to him when he came into my neighborhood early on. He had about 100 capos which was a ton back then! It may have even been the most. That was around May or June 2010. Capos were a lot harder to find back then too. Fewer places registered & "cool capos" (SC) didn't exist.
MVW: About how long do you think it took you to get to 100 capos?
-
Mystery: On 6/26/11, I hit 100. I keep track of the dates I gain 100, as well as the date and name of each capo I claim.
MVW: How many do you have now?
Mystery: I have 3291, although a couple are out on loan.
MVW: Do you get mad when someone "steals" a capo?
Mystery: I used to, lol. Now I usually don't, unless its someone purposefully trying to aggravate me or its one that means a lot.
MVW: I'd imagine a lot get reset just by someone hopping through. How do you find so many?
Mystery: The low influence town capos I have do get reset a lot by people hopping, but I expect that. And it's lots of work to find them!
MVW: Back to mob for a second, do you punch codes daily?
Mystery: Normally, yes.
MVW: Have you finished ICM?
-
Mystery: No, I haven't finished ICM. I got my first 6k mob using players' walls and the invite forum. Then I started using TWDB. Then I used the spreadsheet, then TWDB, then ICM. I did finish TWDB. Now I slowly punch back through the old codes on ICM when I do regs. I had accounts on the other code sites as well, but didn't use them much.
MVW: All in all, is the game still fun for you?
Mystery: Yes, it is still fun. I wouldn't
keep playing if it wasn't. There are days where all the trolls get annoying. On those days, I just take a break. After all, being on 24/7 (as I've be "accused of") is hard work. 😊MVW: Lol, funny, I was just going to ask you about trolls. There were a few recently who caught your attention, and in my opinion, downright insulted you. Does that happen a lot?
-
Mystery: I suppose it depends on how long they stick around. Some insult me (or attempt to insult me) at least once a day. The worst are typically the young kids seeking attention. Once they start with the insults, I just delete the stuff they post on my wall without reading it. I don't respond. Most usually get the message. (Assuming they didn't start the game as one) Others I've found when I capped and destroyed racist turf off them.
MVW: Yeah, it's easy to run your mouth when nobody can see your face! I appreciate what you do!
Mystery: TY! It's amazing how kids think there aren't any consequences for mouthing off in TW.
MVW: Does your husband still play?
Mystery: Not really. On rare occasion, he'll open TW and plant some turfs, but he's moved onto other games, like Worl of Tanks.
MVW: Are you a solo player?
Mystery: Yes, I am solo.
MVW: Have you always been solo?
-
Mystery: No. Early on, I was in TnT Familia-Big Hank's alliance and GC3. Big Hank's wasn't much of an alliance though, lol.
MVW: After those, alliance life just wasn't your thing anymore?
Mystery: Lol, you say that like they were bad experiences. They weren't. I loved GC3! I was a member before it actually had a name and was in it until is disbanded. After that, some of us kind of had a non-alliance thing.
Mystery then had this to add to her GC3 days: You already know the story of how Drizzy "bullied" me into being in GC3, right? He said he'd take my capo if I didn't join. I was so torn over what to do. I started talking to attrition about it & that's actually when & why attrition decided to play TW. -
I decided to go ahead & accept Drizzy's offer. I was wary though because I didn't know what might be required of me. Little did I know there was stuff going on between Widowmaker (from GC3) & Big Hank (I was already in TnT Familia when I joined GC3). I think GC3 thought they could use me to their advantage. TnT wasn't really much of an alliance though. In fact, I didn't know anyone else in either alliance at that point, save for Big Hank & Drizzy. I think Driz & Hank had already fought over San Antonio & Houston. (My memory is pretty vague about those details though.) I never ended up having to pick a side or fight though because around then is when Big Hank faked his death.
MVW: Tell me about the Mystery War.
-
Mystery: Ok, the short version: The Mysterain. Other reasons I'll probably never know, but that's ok.
Some players have told me they thought I didn't fight. That's simply is not true. I fought my ass off. It wasn't something I enjoyed - it felt like there was too much hostility (sometimes to the point of hate) from the other side. I did start learning about war banter though & how that could be fun. I also got a laugh when I got the message "[Player X] destroyed The 4th of July." I then started trying to think of turf names that would make for amusing messages when they were destroyed. At one point I spent at least 15 minutes straight defending 1 turf from 1 player.
Eventually, we reached a truce. I'm actually on decent to good terms now with a lot of the players that fought against me. -
MVW: Were any of the recent resets a surprise to you?
Mystery: Cromag surprised me. Missy surprised me, not that Missy was that recent.
MVW: What about Freemason?
Mystery: No, Mason wasn't a surprise. I had been talking him out of resetting for months. I am still surprised about Rige and stop. The others typically take it too far and get game-banned.
MVW: I've seen how nasty they can be. How do they usually come about to be trolls? Is it because you kindly offer them a little advice?
Mystery: It varies. I've ben cursed at just for asking their code, lol. I usually just ignore that and they don't pm me again. Others I found when they've capped inactives and I've asked them to stop. Some I've called out for lying in the forum. IDK how or why exactly a player becomes a troll. (ck, and that was years ago! lol)
-
MVW: Do you think that you would ever reset?
Mystery: I can't imagine. It just doesn't seem right. I've even told attrition that if I die, he needs to leave my account as it is, no reset!!! I think I'd be more likely to fade away than ever officially quit. Besides, I'm opposed to capos that don't register anymore being destroyed. Resetting would go against that, lol.
MVW: What are some of your TW memories?
-
Mystery: When I first started playing I hated hopping! I was trying to remember why I hated it so much, so I started thinking back...loot didn't exist & max turf inf was 84. I hopped the cheap way (meaning not adding the warehouse or gambling den). This means I was hopping with 49 inf turfs. It's no wonder it seemed agonizing! One accomplishment I was really excited about was being the first player to hit 2000 capos. I remember things like naming my turf starting with a city abbreviation because back then, not only was there not a city view on profiles, but the city wasn't listed under the turf name on the "My Turf" screen. You had to actually click on your turf to see what city it was in.
-
I remember when local leaderboards first came out & I was on the US fight leaderboard. I didn't know I was on it until I suddenly started being attacked a lot. 😂 Then I decided to try & keep it high by hiding in the ER all the time. What a pain, lol. I was on the world fight leaderboard for awhile. I had hoped to be #1 on there one day. I've since found that staying on the fight leaderboard means you tend to miss out on other fun things.
MVW: What advice would you give to new players?
Mystery: I have a whole wiki page full of advice, lol! Hmmm....Don't rush into anything except mobbing up. Learn the game. Get to know people. Read the forums for awhile before posting. Don't trash-talk. Be polite. Most of all, have fun! And the link to the wiki is turfwarswiki.com

Rumor Mill:
London gets a new capo:
The London England Capo, once the crown jewel in the TWFC empire now has a new owner. Kilgore Trout, long time member of the BAIC alliance, now holds the prized capo, cementing a sea change of power in the UK. The greater London area has seen a great deal of change in recent months during the lead up to the capitulation of TWFC. The city and airport had previously been locked down and controlled by twfc for years until an invasion force landed in mid summer 2013. The invasion was met with relatively little resistance as members of various alliances fighting twfc arrived and joined the fight. Recent months have seen an increase in BAIC activity in presence in The London Area.

Italy War Heats up:
Sicily, the birthplace of La Cosa Nostra has becomes latest battleground.
Over the last couple years, Srawfrut, Midnite, and others had planted turf in Sicily on RL trips. Various others joined them either by hopping, or by visiting in RL. Several BAIC / NWR had hopped that direction in pursuit of Srawfrut before he reset. After Rome was opened, various (ex?)-TWFC and Midnite associates arrived there, such as Benjy, Rlmon, Bugsy1, Gameplan, Sin, Shaggs, Elliot, and some new associates like Scarzy, Eruser and Willpower.
Several BAIC, NWR, WSS and friends of theirs mounted an assault on the island itself in spite of a thought-to-be impenetrable wall of turf. Rumors are abound that there is a "rat" in the ranks of the TWFC / Midnite crew(s).
At press time the battle was raging, BAIC etc appears to be making headway, but TWFC etc appears to still hold substantial ground. Stay tuned to Turf Tales News for updates.

Breaking News Account returns:
The account known as "BREAKING NEWS" made another appearance earlier this week, reporting on a recent name change by Mickey Dunn. The BREAKING NEWS account, which mimics the "breaking news" posts provide by the TTnews publication has led to confusion amongst the community as to whether or not it is part of the TTNews team. Speaking on the issue, Chief Editor Fallacy stated "the BREAKING NEWS account has no link or connection to me or the TTnews. I am not sure who it is or what it's purpose is, but members of this news team have no reason to report from behind a mule account"
-
Mickey Dunn name change explained:
A name change earlier this week had members of the Turf Wars community scratching their heads. Mickey Dunn, the games largest player, change his name to Vishbume in an unexpected move that had early speculation pointing to a lost Super Bowl wager. Upon further investigation, it was discovered the name change is in relation to war confusion tactics as part of war game currently being hosted by NGC.
Brizz steps down as part time writer:

Nice work team. I really enjoyed the interview with Mystery.
She was instrumental in helping me start the game and get off to a healthy start by providing a safe income area (the Houston Safe Zone or HSZ) that helped numerous players in late 2010-2012.
Hats off to you Mystery and Attrition for all you've done to help nurture growth in the tw community. 👏👏

Yikes - seeing my spelling & grammar mistakes is painful.
A few things seem to have been accidentally cut off. Let me see if I can find the rest.

Here's the first part I wrote about the Mystery War:
Ok, the short version: The Mystery War lasted a little over 6 weeks starting in June 2012. It totally caught be by surprise, yet had really been a long time coming. Different people had different reasons for fighting me.
One reason is that I used to ask people not to tax or capped people that taxed my 1 inf turfs. I know why I didn't want them taxed, but now that I have some perspective I can also see how annoying that must have been.
Some reasons went much deeper because of a lot of history. I'm not interested in dredging that up again. Other reasons I'll probably never know, but that's ok.

I can't believe I didn't mention the HSZ. It was actually Widowmaker's idea. He started it, then when he gave Attrition the Houston capo, Attrition, Ultra, & I enforced it.
It was only successful for so long because the other big players that showed up were cool enough to respect it - even those that disagreed with safe zones or were fighting wars. Many players earned my respect for being so cool there.
