The Battle for Ontario
By: FallacyIt was only a few weeks ago that a curious forum post by Ms. Daisy caught the eye of the Turf Wars community. While the post was an open invite for drinks at a Toronto pub, there was also reference made to “changing the future of Toronto”. Toronto has a long and bloody history in the game, with several battles to having been fought to decide it’s control. The earliest wars were a band of locals fighting against oppression from Midnite, and would eventually lead to the forming of CAPO. Years later, a group lead by Certusd which included midnite, Ms Daisy, RLmon, Local Assassin, Professor Manacles, Davey the kid (and others) would fight a successful war of attrition for the city against Groucho and The Commission.
-
As Groucho and the Commission pulled out of Toronto, CAPO and Cert’s group remained as the two biggest stakeholders with an uneasy truce separating them. A cold war between the two groups would ensue. As tension mounted it seem only inevitable that war between the two largely Canadian based groups would follow. After a number of heated exchanges through the GD forum, the cold war would end, as the two groups finally met in the field. A series of victories in the UK and Toronto in favor of CAPO would create a period of stability in the City, which has lasted for many months.
Recently, however, Ms. Daisy with her group consisting of RLmon, midnite, Game, Midnite, Bugsy1 as well as a number of other friends, have decided to challenge CAPO and have declared their intentions to retake Toronto. TTNews caught up with Daisy to discuss.
-
FAL: You have made your intentions to changed the future of Toronto well known. Can you explain what this means?
Daisy: Toronto has been under solid CAPO control for a long time. As a local and someone who thinks the game needs to be stirred up to keep it fun, a group of us decided to take on one of the largest alliances on their home turf.
FAL: Fair enough. But the game has been shaken up, has it not? just weeks ago you were fighting TC along with Capo, Stars, and others...
Daisy: I was fighting anyone with tags to keep things interesting but spreading myself a Lot. All good fun but decided it was time to focus at home. All the fights have been a great learning experience.
FAL: How successful has your attack on Toronto been thus far?
Daisy: It's going to be a long battle. So far we've dug in and CAPO has not been able to remove us from areas all around the Greater Toronto Area. That being said, Getting in and holding parts of Toronto will take time, no luck yet.
-
FAL: Since I am on the frontlines and actively chasing your group, I can't help but notice what looks like cooperation with members of The Commission. Not to mention their members have rotated into your V's. Are you now working in cooperation with TC?
Daisy: The Commission has their own agenda as do my friends and I. Where they intersect, we've had some fun cooperating. I've been fighting TC for over a year, but it's fun to break up established patterns and try something new ... Keeps the game fresh.
FAL: Care to mention and specific members of your group that have been particularly effective this far?
Daisy: Bugsy and Gameplan are true warriors ... Will drop 300 turf in an hour when needed. Midnite has his own agenda, but lives here as well ... A wildcard that does what he wants. RLMON crafty and sneaks up on players regularly.
-
FAL: How about your opponents. Is anyone deserving of special mention?
Daisy: Although the CAPO fight has taken some effort , there's not a particular adversary who has been overwhelming. It was surprising to see Baptist enter the fray helping CAPO as we used to be allies with Cert, but his real focus is TC so this nasty fighter with many Brens hasn't made an impact. Out of the other wars I've fought I'd have to give credit to Mayhem (Stars) and Hammer (flames). I value tenacity, these guys have chased me around field in nowhere for -month- just to trying to kick me out of an area.
FAL: I have to admit I have found the battle boring. I have covered you night after night, not bothering to range. And yet you do not bother to cap, but rather choose to only run away. Any comments?
Daisy: Making your opponent bored is a technique. If a battle is going to take months and months, you don't try and settle it in a week ... Especially if you're the smaller side
-
Thanks Daisy. All the best wishes in your battles, you will need it!
As a follow up, TTnews contacted Duair, long time CAPO member for his thoughts on the current battle:
Duair: I cant really call it a war to be honest, mostly because that would be degrading to every single other war ive ever fought. If we are really looking at whats going on in ontario its essentially a handful of players running away and capping any inactives or newcomers they find in their way. I guess id call it a chase.

Self help 101:Thoughts on Alliances:
By CrackaAs an alliance 'founder', I have a few words of advice to new groups. First off, I'm the main founder of the group that is now known as 〓CAPO〓. 〓CAPO〓 will be 3 years old in February 2014 (about 2 months from now).
-
1) Do not go Public. Spend as much time as a 'Secret' group as possible. Do not add tags, do not publicly recruit, do not openly discuss the alliance until you are fully ready. Recruit in secret only people you trust for the first year (my opinion). The first time people hear about you should be a triumphant win against a local bully, TW local plague, or as a new-comer into a war you have the upper-hand in. You do not want your publicity to be negative at all as a new alliance. This means being politically correct, positive insight in the forums, fair-play when fighting, being politically correct and never being racist, discriminatory, over-the-top, etc. You never know when a life-time enemy will become an ally, so keep the war talk mildly polite or at least have an agreement between the groups fighting or the group you run.
-
2) The more active you are, the more attention you will receive. This goes two ways - the more active the alliance, the quicker you will build alliances and enemies (Positive and Negative attention). In the first 6 months of starting an alliance (at least) I recommend contacting one of the well-known alliances (BAIC, TC, Massholes, Stars, CAPO, NWR, SF, WSS, etc - whomever you like most) and asking for an advisor to temporarily join the group until you can stand on your own. The advisor should be a reputable member of TW and be able to tell you when you're in over your head as a group and should be willing to help the group in war and decision-making.
-
3) Grow to extreme numbers before coming into the main-stream lights. When the community finally is shown what your group can do, it should be shown good things that they can support and get behind. With CAPO, I brought in 2-3 advisors from different groups when we started and stayed neutral/ allied with most main groups to avoid a fight we couldn't win. Fights either make or break a group, and if you violently lose a battle in an early stage of an alliance, the alliance normally disbands, same goes for older alliances who get way in over their head in war - the more outnumbered you get, the more likely for dispersement and relocation of your members.
-
4) Alliances constantly lose members. I call this (as others do) 'The Leaking Bucket' Theory - meaning no matter how many members you have, there's always a lot who quit randomly- even the best players. No matter how many players join a group, there's always a proportionate amount who quit as well. (Add water to the bucket to keep it full as the hole in the bottom leaks water out at the same rate - bucket never becomes full) - Recruit often but not foolishly.
5) Members who have history will add to the alliance history. If you recruit a member who has trouble with another alliance, you are either committing to not helping your new recruit against their endeavors or committing to fighting a group you could have allied with or even had neutrality with in the long run, damaging the group in general in the long run. A lot of groups have failed after adding a new member - the new member gets the whole alliance into a war they can't win - always check players' backgrounds before recruiting.
-
6) Spell out how your group runs. Make your rules of the alliance recognizable to all members. If you forbid excessive crap-talking,or promote constant fighting etc, enforce it, and you will be thought of as more of legitimate group than those that do not.
7) When you have grown large enough to become public and/or war, coordinate with your allies and make sure to always include them when you fight. Choose a group or two you fully trust and pledge allegiance to them and dedicate your groups to backing each other up. Never over-estimate your alliance. No matter how big you get, you can always lose in the long run without teamwork.

Introducing the newest member to the Star Alliance, ★THΞ WЯΛTH★
By: 〓MrsVWTech〓★THΞ WЯΛTH★ started playing Turf Wars in early 2010. At first, he didn't do much with the game. Then he got into a few little battles, which fed the addiction. He was a one man army fighting a few local mobs back in the day. Soon, he got on well with those players and they formed a small alliance called NEA. Wrath said, "Fighting in an alliance seemed right from the start." All of NEA ended up becoming recruits for DBR helping against TWFC in their local towns/cities.
-
When asked if Wrath had always wanted to join the Stars or if there were other alliances he had thought about, he responded, "After DBR and the merge with BORG ended, I soon got involved in fighting with anyone against twfc/associates. I was fighting alongside the Stars in a few areas and they came across as a good war crew. I've fought alongside some members from the Stars for some time, so I knew they were pretty good. I just helped out anywhere I could. I did have offers to join other alliances, but some I knew wouldn't work out. So I just stayed put and helped any alliance fight the cause."
-
So what helped Wrath make Stars his final decision on an alliance? "The Stars Alliance to me, knowing a few members of that alliance for some time, just seemed to be the right alliance that matched my old DBR days. It's a full on fighting crew and very loyal at that. You don't ask to get in to these crews, you've got to show you're good enough and committed. After the fight to take over the north UK, I didn't have the commitment and took a little time out to start a new business. But since my return I got back in the fight, the commitment is there and it's fueled my flame 😃👉🔥so to speak. I got back fighting with the stars against a new enemy and it's all good.💦🔥," said Wrath.
-
I asked Wrath if he had any specific likes or dislikes of being in the Stars. His reply, " Joining the stars is just what I need. Good solid fighting crew👊! The only dislike I have...on that first night of joining Stars, I got to witness chuckdaves moobs.. I'm still having nightmares😫." I think moobs would give anybody nightmares!
-
People often question how to join an alliance or wonder what alliance may be right for them. I asked Wrath if he had any advice for someone who may be looking to join one. "If a player wanted to get into an alliance, I'd say, put in the work on the map and help out as much as you can. Get to know the crew and get a good spread around the globe! Stay on top of your game and you will get snapped up with a crew in time👍." That is great advice. Some final thoughts from Wrath, "Thanks to the Stars for inviting me into the crew 👌👊👍. Oh, PS, I know I ain't a big "mobber" but some people need to get it straight!! MOMMA DIDNT RAISE NO MULE!! 😉"
Thank You, ★THΞ WЯΛTH★ for your time. Good luck with The Stars!
Happy Turfing,

Looking back on the Funky Movement with the Buffalo Himself!
By: BrizzBrizz: So let's begin where they all begin: why don't you tell me a little bit about how you started playing tw.
Funky Buffalo: I started playing randomly during the great noob movement. Had no idea what I was doing just getting the hang of TW when VW TDI (vtech) started leveling my turf because I was too high on the fight% list. That lead me to the help forum where I got a real feel for the game.
Brizz: And how long have you been playing now?
Funky Buffalo: 2 years December 15th.
Brizz: And from the little amount of time I've known you, I can tell you have the kind of mouth that can get a person in trouble. Who was the first enemy you made in tw?
-
Funky Buffalo: I didn't start out that way. I was a hugger right from the beginning. My first fight ever was against The Far Side. He capped a friend of mine after I asked him not to twice. OTB helped me organize a plan and we all hopped to Virginia to cap him out. After that I did not have another conflict until the Funky movement.
Brizz: Oh really? That must have made far side angry! Did he retaliate in anyway?
Funky Buffalo: He made a V thread and (once again) Vtech was a pain in my side. He joined a v with him and broke most of our v's. For most of us it was the first V we were in so we didn't fully understand the game. We made a truce and moved on. I met The Far Side irl about a year later. He turned out to be a great guy. A good reminder that it's just a game. Someone's gameplay style doesn't necessarily reflect their personality.
-
Brizz: That is a good lesson to learn from the game, one we could all stand to remember. Have there been other times when you felt you misjudged a player?
Funky Buffalo: I don't think so. I think i usually have a good read on a player. There's many who would disagree with that though.
Brizz: So, tell me a little bit about the funky movement. How would you describe it?
Funky Buffalo: Well most players don't remember now but I didn't have any enemies. I was friends with 99% of players. I literally couldn't cap a turf without getting a long drawn out message about why I was capping my friends. The game had become stale for me so I started the Funky Movement to quit the game. I figured since I worked so hard punching and had never really fought I would use it before I quit.
-
Brizz: I remember the Funky Movement was not very popular. You messed up the income in a lot of towns. People were very upset about that. How did you convince people to join your movement?
Funky Buffalo: Well when it started I was talking with two friends Yellomansoldier and 😈Z. We started it among ourselves. I asked people I was helping to cap me out of important areas and we started going to town. We never meant for it to be anything more than 3 friends burning the map before we left. I posted a message on my wall what we were doing and started capping. I was up 300 turf in 4 days (a lot for me at the time) and the only thing I got was "awesome funky" "thanks for including me" it wasn't exactly the response we were looking for. We wanted to fight. So I posted the "calling all bad guys" thread in the forum threatening to cap inactives. I figured this would get the forum trolls to start fighting us. I got people to join with a simple philosophy. Play how you want but you will be destroyed.
-
Brizz: When did you begin to get backlash?
Funky Buffalo: Not too long after the thread the freedom fighters sought to save the game from the evil funky movement. It was exactly what we wanted. What we didn't expect was the larger players and larger alliances deciding to jump in. We wanted to be destroyed but were hoping to do more damage. When good players like havoc, chucky pancamo, so fresh, vtech and more jumped in we knew it wouldn't be long before the end.
Brizz: Who were the freedom fighters?
Funky Buffalo: The alliance that was spotlighted in the last TW news article. A largely inexperienced group of fighters that had us outnumbered by far. It was a fun fight we all had a good time on both sides.
-
Brizz: And who were the main players to challenge you?
Funky Buffalo: I don't remember any specific Freedom Fighters that challenged us. It was a good group effort. They were everywhere.
Brizz: So how did the Funky Movement ultimately come to an end?
Funky Buffalo: After the Freedom Fighters decided to stop fighting us 2 other alliances and various other players jumped in. Most were really upset and believed we were destroying the game. Called us terrorists I believe lol. Z😈 got pinned down in Rochester and promised a local to leave the city alone so that was the end for him. Once he stopped I largely stopped playing as well. Moved all my turf to Nassau. This infuriated players even more. At the end it was just a desire to not play anymore. We quit, yelloman got banned for turf names and we left. The funky movement didn't stop there though.
-
Brizz: Wow, what happened next?
Funky Buffalo: Then the trolls decided they were funky too. They're the ones who most people remember. It's a shame. Although we said we were capping everywhere we all had agreements with certain people or certain towns to keep them out of it. Like I said. We Asked to be capped out of important areas before the game. We didn't break our good friendships during the movement. The trolls did not have this lol. So long after we were gone people were dealing with the fallout of what we did.
Brizz: I see. Makes total sense. Any lasting results for you? Anyone still hold a grudge?
Funky Buffalo: Haha. Yes.
Brizz: Care to expand on that?
Funky Buffalo: When I came back the same alliances that were chasing me at the end of the Funky movement started chasing me again. I also still have areas of the map I'm not welcome in because of what I did. I understand it because people think I'm going to just start capping one day without notice. Or want the hassle of people chasing me around.
-
Brizz: Anyway, I really appreciate you sitting down and telling me about the funky movement. Nice to get to relive some tw history. I guess I only have one last question: do you have any regrets?
Funky Buffalo: Yes, wish I never downloaded turf wars.
Brizz: Really? Why?
Funky Buffalo: I have an addictive personality and turf wars is addicting. That's a problem. Seriously though I wish I would have joined an alliance before starting the funky movement. Would have spiced up my game without ruining my game for almost a year that it took me to get back on my feet.
Brizz: Well, thanks again for sharing your story with me, Buff. It's been really nice taking this stroll through the past. I'm sure the readers will enjoy it.

Message from the Editor:
As Christmas approaches many of us are busy with friends and family functions. The next Turf Tales News will simply come when it's ready. As always the door remains open for those with stories to share, and on that note I encourage a representative from TC to participate in our upcoming story on the war. As I've said before, if you only see one side of the story, it will simply be because the other side refuses to comment.
Happy holidays!
