Issue 10 of the Turf Tales News: Special Edition
Welcome to Issue 10 of the Turf Tales News.
This week saw an interesting thread posted in the General Discussion forum titled: How to encourage new players to stay (LaTortuga). As the title suggests, the forum post was dedicated to retaining new players. This issue is dedicated to them ā the new player ā and contains 3 Self Help 101 articles in an effort to help them get their feet on the ground. Please feel free to post your newbie tips as well!

Cover Story: Discussing the M@dhitmen split.
One of the first articles I wrote for the TTnews was an overview and interview with M@d regarding the recent merger between two alliances: M@dfam and the Happy Hitmen (See Issue 1: Powers Unite article). At that time things seemed optimistic as MH was transitioning from two small and tightly knit groups into a larger and more powerful alliance via the merger.
The M@dhitmen alliance would continue to grow and was a popular destination for players seeking a new lease on life in the game. A number of former TWFC and FUA players would find a new home with the M@dhitmen - some of which who had not quite outlived the shadows of their past. In a controversial move, MH recruited BOMP, a player with a long legacy of wars and burnt bridges. As traditional enemies continued to fight BOMP, tension came to a head when MH decided to defend their new member, resulting in a battle between MH vs. Baic, W.S.S. and late comers the North Star Mafia.
-
s the battle continued into week 2, fractures within the MH alliance were beginning to form. Sustained pressure from Baic, W.S.S. and the NSM would push MH to their limit, resulting in a number of their members dropping tags and leaving the alliance. Internal issues would continue to mount, and as reported earlier this week, the M@dhitmen would come to an end. Turf Tales News caught up with the M@dhitmenās former leaders, M@d and Greedo, to discuss the split:
FAL: First of all ā any general comments on the demise of the M@dhitmen?
M@d: With a heavy heart - I am going to miss our big family. We cannot change the past, only work on the future. Only time will tell where things will end up and I can only hope for everyone to find peace and happiness.
-
Greedo: It is sad that two groups that fit so well together could not come together in a time of adversity. Instead of investigating or coordinating, and coming together to discuss the situation, people started bailing. I'm sure given the chance for real discussion this split could have been averted.
FAL: Can you shed any light onto what caused the split?
M@d: An alliance is like a clock. If a gear falls out, the clock stops working. We had more than one gear fall out or disappear. No pointing fingers, we all played our part.
Greedo: A safe spot on pelee island which was thought to be secured was compromised by the groups we were fighting. Afterwards finger pointing and conspiracy theories began and it spiraled out of control very, very fast. That one incident was really the beginning of the end.
-
FAL: MH was undergoing an aggressive recruit drive just as the battle began. With the demise of MH, what happened to MH recruits?
M@d: I took the time to PM them all and let them know we will not leave them behind. Only time will tell if either M@DF@M or HH start a new but I will be sure to help them all find a home.
Greedo: We have contacted them and keeping them informed of what's going on. If things are ever settled we may be able to continue that process if they are still wishing to join.
FAL: With the demise of MH, many are asking if the two predecessors, Madfam and Happy Hitmen are being reborn. Are they?
M@d: No. Some former M@dfam hope this would be the case, but there is really no point.
-
Greedo: It is too soon to answer if the HH is being reborn. It is being considered. My cards are still with the M@D crew and to my knowledge I have not been kicked out, although they have not responded to me yet either.
Thank you for conducting this interview with TTnews, and all the best in your future endeavours.

Self help 101: CAPOs explained
Why do Capos matter? Many reasons, which can vary by player or specific Capo. In general, they are a game-created objective, and they offer free police protection for all your turf in that city. For all practical purposes, those benefits don't mean much on the surface, but there are several other reasons people want Capos. For example: Prestige. A Capo such as New York City or Las Vegas is cool. Keeping a Capo for years is also something veteran players might take pride in. Sometimes the Capo just looks good on your profile, is unusual, funny or has sexual connotation, such as Big Beaver, Peach Bottom, or Fucking.
Occupying a small Capo can also have strategic value. Players use them to "hide in plain sight" such as a mall in a big city - The player does not appear to be in that city, but may reach an enemies turf from that mall. -
There is some certain generally recognized etiquette involved with Capos. (Disclaimer: The author and Turf Tales make no guarantee that following this will prevent all problems!)
Sometimes, you plant a turf, the initial screen says Capo: None. Congratulations! You have found a new or abandoned Capo! Enjoy!
Sometimes, for no apparent reason, your news feed tells you have taken a Capo from someone. This is usually the result of them lowering their influence (or having it lowered for themš) and usually no action is expected of you.
If you are turf hopping or temporarily building up influence in an area and take a Capo from a bigger player but do not intend to keep it, a friendly PM informing them that you are aware you have taken it and intend to return it is recommended. -
Sometimes you may be building or capping turf in an area, and get a notification later on (the system can take 5-15 min to update, more if turf is healing) that you are now the Capo, even if that was not your intent. Again, sending a PM or a polite reply if you get a PM from the former Capo should prevent misunderstandings.
So what do you do if you DO want to be, and are capable of building or capturing enough turf to become Capo of your town, but a larger player already is? Yep, send a polite PM. The Capo may or may not allow it, but if you take it without asking, and they did not want you to, they may take that as disrespectful and respond by attacking or capping your turf to get it back. -
And while you are certainly not obligated to notify a smaller player, it could make you an ally instead of creating resentment.
If you are curious if you are close to becoming Capo of your town, go to top mobs by influence and select the to the city level. It can be up to 15 minutes behind if you have just built or captured new turf.
The loss of Capo to a bigger player is not generally regarded by the Turf Wars community as a valid reason to get support for a Vendetta, in spite of the fact that the vendetta help screen states you can use a vendetta to team up with neighbors and take on the Capo.-Chucky Pancamo

Self Help 101-Ranging
A small-mobbed player does have an advantage in this game over a larger player. They are able to "range" the bigger player. This means that their turf capturing distance is larger. For example, a player at 20k may have up to a two mile capture distance on a player that is 70k. Being in a V may change your capture distance. Be aware that you can still only cap the larger player if you are in a V or the target player is on "discount.""Discount" applies to players that are members of V's. Their defense is 40% weaker to everybody that the V does not target. (THIS DOES NOT APPLY IF SOMEONE IS SIMPLY TARGETED BY A V). There is also a "travel discount." This applies to someone who has just built turf more that 149 miles from existing turf, usually by using a plane ticket. That discount is 30% and reduces to zero over a four week period. Run the numbers first. (There is a great stat calculator on the Turf Wars Wiki Page www.turfwarswiki.com).
-
How to range.
Ranging can take a little bit of time, but is effective. First, build a turf just outside the capture range. The first check on the "Capture Checklist" of the turf you wish to cap will be red. (You will have to play around to get just outside of range). Next, build that turf up. Place a 1 influence turf right in front of it, as close to the pink circle as possible. Check the "Capture Checklist" of your opponent's turf. If you still cannot cap the turf, build another turf right in front of that one. Continue the process until your turf is in range. If you range properly, the bigger player will not be able to cap you. If anybody would like to practice this, please contact me. I will be happy to help you out.
Happy Turfing!

Self Help 101: Secrets to Picking Your TW Home
In August of 2012, I joined an alliance called the Union. I thought that it would a great fit for me. The leader, Benny da Boss, was a really mellow guy and the other members seemed equally nice. Two days later, I quit. While there was nothing that was implicitly wrong with my experience, I felt that the members had too much negative history with my husband for me to ever feel like it was a home.
-
For the next eight months, I worked on leading an alliance called BLS, which was ultimately given to Slacker so that he could resume his alliance, Pax. BLS/Pax (sometimes called pax 2.0 which is funny because the most recent pax exodus was actually the SECOND major exodus, making this the third incarnation) was always a good fit for me as the members got me in a way many others didn't. They understood my humor, my flirty nature, and the factor that gets me in the most trouble: my big mouth. In Pax, there was never a desire to change me or suppress my behavior, but to simply embrace me in a loyal, loving manner.
-
Recently, I left Pax briefly to be are recruit for the Happy Hitmen. The reason behind that decision was that I had a desire to fight and my small-but-close alliance wasn't prepared for most available battles. After encouraging them to join in the fight in Berlin only to be rejected, I decided I had to go elsewhere.
I wasn't aware when I asked for admittance that they would be merging with Madfam, and it wasn't until the night of the merger that I was accepted. I faltered briefly because, after all, I had not planned to join Madfam. While I had a great deal of respect for their leader, Mad (you might even say Mad respect), it just wasn't my plan. Within Madfam, I felt rather alien. There were references to me being on my "best behavior" for most of the experience and yet, it wasn't working. -
One day, after something upsetting happened in an alliance room, I suddenly wondered why I was keeping my mouth shut about it. I guess that moment was my game changing epiphany: I'm grown, this is a game, and while I should (and will) always do my best to be respectful, I should never feel like I have to be on my "best behavior" in order to fit in.
My experiences with alliances have taught me something that should always be kept in mind by players who are alliance hunting. This is a game. Even if they remove you from the map, you can rebuild. What makes this game fun is loving who is fighting at your side. And if you're turf hugging? So what. If it's fun for you, do it. There is no reason to play this game by anyone's rules other than your own.

Mob Milestone:
This week we say hello to Õį„ɓısŃeŹ āćć į ā and congratulate him on his 70k mob.
DJ - Congrats on your mob milestone of 70k. Did you ever think you would achieve this?
Sinister - absolutely not. It's very depressing thinking about the amount of time I've spent punching codes so I try to not think about it
DJ - What made you persevere with punching all those codes? And which mobster gave you the kick to get punching?
Sinister - these are both answered the same. When I first started out in August of 2010 people would take advantage of the old influence rule by dropping all their turf to 1inf. !rogue hopped to my home town and ruined me. I even had the old cms guys trying to help me. Long swamp was my first friend on this game and he got me punching codes so I could finally get back at !rogue. Rogues name was something different back then I believe it was davey boy or something like that.
-
DJ - how long have you been playing tw for? Have you been punching codes religiously since you started?
Sinister - August 2010, but I never really started punching until a few months after.
DJ - are we going to be looking at Õį„ɓısŃeŹ āćć į ā with 80k mob any time soon you think?
Sinister - I would guess 2-3 months and ill be at 80k.
DJ - what advice would you give to someone who is not a keen puncher of codes?
Sinister - punching codes is very rewarding, it sucks but once you gain the mob it's an awesome feeling to get revenge on someone from the past.
-
DJ - who were your favourite enemies?
Sinister - as much as I hated her before I always enjoyed fighting bugs bunny. Back when I was fighting bugs and some other stars in Tampa maybe 2 years ago they made it so difficult because they used strategy like no one Ive ever seen before. I didn't join cms until after that so they were the first real wars I was in.
DJ - Sinister. Many congrats on the huge 70k milestone! We will see you at 80k.
