For the real mechanics...

So I'm doing brakes and rotors on my 07 jeep grand cherokee. Parts alone cost me almost $150. Since I do all my own auto repairs, I've never paid a garage to do them. So to all you actual mechanics out there, how much would front brakes, rotors, and repairing a seized slide have cost me at your garage?

I'm not a mechanic, but I just had the brakes on my wife's 2007 Toyota Sienna done at a garage. $265 for parts and labor.
-
Assuming parts cost the same as my jeep, (which I doubt but it's a possibility due to the fact of it being an import) that's $115 in labor. For a job that took me about an hour and a half with a floor jack and hand tools. Damn, I'm in the wrong profession.

If you go to a dealership your looking at a lot more than that.

2 hours labour @ £45 per hour, plus tax = £108 labour inc tax.

But I am booked solid for the next 8 days, and traveling fee may be an issue.

You can easily apply that to most things. Home repairs/maintenance such as plumbing, electrical, roofing etc.... All would be cheaper if done by the homeowner. Don't forget, it's not just the labor but also the cost of a business license, a business location (possibly), insurance, and other costs that you are also paying for.

I'm an electrician, so yes, I know that there are times that a homeowner will make a problem worse by trying a self fixit solution. I wasn't advocating that everybody try and solve their own problems, rather, I was pointing out that "labor" costs aren't just payments for labor alone.〓 RAZOR EDGE 〓 wrote:

Believe me, I understand the overhead of owning your own business. I know taxes and insurance is a fairly large chunk. I've also learned how to do most home and auto maintenance work at a fairly early age so I can save some money. I'm not the greatest at some things, but my work is passable.

Not sitting at the shop computer top of my head guess would be around $300 parts and labor , that is also the best parts not the cheap white box parts they sell the do it yourselfers at super discount prices , and my shop labor rate is $85 per hour and I would get an hour to do that job
-
👆Your in the wrong shop ! Ouch ...your not flat rate are you? Standard brake job at my shop would run you 2 hours labor ...depending on how seized the slide was we may have charged a extra half hour
-
That's because you would sleep for that first hour vw...lol.
-
No I wouldn't sleep Lol...maybe cap a few turf but not sleep ! I didn't say it would take me that long....that's just what the job pays . I don't get paid hourly but by the job

Firstly, I haven't read every comment. Secondly, I'm a carpenter/landscaper - not a mechanic.
That aside, my father was head mechanic at a large earthmoving equipment sales/hire/repair shop a few years ago, and his boss used to charge $90 per hour to any customer who had equipment in the workshop. Obviously dad wasn't on that full rate, but that was what the company charged - and it was a low to average rate compared to other car/truck/machinery mechanics in the surrounding towns.
So for a simple enough job like changing the brakes, at that kind of rate and for an hour or so of work, you'd be looking at about $100 labour.
Like you, I do most of my car maintenance myself. It's cheaper, and money don't come easy! lol.
