Turf Tales News - issue 5
Welcome to Issue 5 of the news. This is an "interview edition"
This week the barn doors seemed to really blow off. The news seems to have gained some good momentum. Story ideas, player submissions and rumor submissions have been rolling in from the community. Thank you!
I do ask a favor. If you like the news, please show m@d, mrs VW and myself your appreciation by bumping the thread. It gives us a sense of worth and support and may one day motivate nick to give us a temporary exemption on the posts per minute rule.
Thank you

Cover Story - smashing Freemason perceptions
Freemason โ itโs a name that most Turf Wars Players will recognize. For some it sends a shudder down their spine. Mason has been around a long time, heโs known as a friendly and chatty voice in the forums. Above all else, Mason is best known for two particular achievements โ reaching and passing 1 million influence as a solo player (no help from builders or alliances) and for holding the record for resetting other players. In many ways, the two appear to be correlated.
Masonโs knack for resetting others is legendary. There have been many jokes and forum posts recalling the various tales. His own profile wall is a testament to his legacy โ a long list of players complaining about his aggressive nature. But forcing others to reset is controversial, and while Freemason may be a popular solo player, he is not without his detractors. Turf Tales caught up with Mason to discuss.
-
FAL: Why did you start? What was your original motivation
Mason: July 9, 2011. Originally I just wanted to survive. The thought of another player bending me at their will never sat well with me.
FAL: Any mentors in your early days?
Mason: No mentors. I simply chose a path and kept with it.
FAL: Tell us about your play style.
-
Mason: I am an educator in real life, it was a natural fit for me to continue that in game. I enjoyed mentoring many different players, many of which have gone on to great TW careers. Several have gone on to join the well known top alliances. A personal goal of mine is to be available. I do my best to answer all of my PMโs and offer advice to new players whenever asked.
FAL: Iโve learned a lot about you already. I always thought of you as an aggressive player. Lets talk about that โ tell us about the resets. How many players have you reset?
Mason: As of last Sunday, 81 players. Of those 81 players, some have reset multiple times, bringing the total to 2100 resets. One player reset over 800 times haha.
-
FAL: Youโve tracked the number of resets. Do you take pride in it?
Mason: I wouldn't really call it pride. It's more of a sense of taking care of players who cannot take care of themselves. Many players fail to see/ask my reasoning. I don't expect everyone to understand. It's okay. That's what makes the community unique. I would rather wipe out one small player with a bad attitude and the community lose one player rather than that one player grow to a sizable number and wipe out 10 to 20+ potentially good players.
FAL: So your resets have always been justified?
-
Mason: I do whatever I feel necessary to get a player gone. Most any player I have ever gone after is one that shows a lack of integrity and uses below the belt insults that are completely unnecessary. I have had players tell me that they plan to rape my wife and kids in front of me while I watch. That's just unnecessary.
FAL: How do you get so many to reset? We all have our enemies, but really there is only so much you can do to another player in this game. How do you get them to actually press the reset button?
Mason: I'm also not the typical gamer. I research everything about players and keep notes. Nothing gets into a players head like telling him/her their lunch schedule, home room teacher, or the color of the car in their driveway. I have studied sleep schedules on players to break them and I have even visited Facebook and MySpace pages just to gather extra intel. Suffice it to say, I find a way for each individual.
-
FAL: Lets talk about your other milestone โ hitting 1 million influence on your own. How did you do it?
Mason: I simply spread out to where I wanted to be, then I capped around the edge of the green circle. The trick was to only take one from any given player at a time while trying extremely hard to only cap precapped turf. Then I would do the same thing in another town. I wouldn't revisit that town for almost 2 weeks. That gave the player time to replant. If a player complained, it was almost always over one turf and the turf more than likely didn't belong to them in the first place. Throw in that method with picking up turf from bad players and I had more than enough to keep me busy. It took almost a year to do it.
FAL: Interesting, sounds like quite the attempt not to destroy small players. Do you ever feel misunderstood as a bully?
-
Mason: Of course. Perception is a dangerous thing. Iโve made some mistakes and tried to make up for them, but generally speaking I think I have been fair in my gameplay. Iโve been told my name has been mentioned as a possible target of bully spank. If anyone has a problem with my gameplay, they have kept it to themselves rather than speaking to me.
FAL: You were 40k back when 40k was HUGE! Yet youโve stopped punching?
Mason: I am more inactive now than I ever have been. The time for me in the game like I used to have simply isn't there anymore. I have been on the verge of resetting since I hit 1 million in April.
-
FAL: It sounds like your entering your end game?
Mason: I'm closer now than I ever have been. It's not because of the game, it's simply due to the fact that my career is taking off and my focus needs to be on that. I know that I have not always been everyone's "favorite" player. I get that. However, I played the game the way that I wanted to. I didn't let others make decisions for me. I'm proud of what I have done and I can't really think of anything I would have done differently.
FAL: Ok, last question.... whatโs your sisterโs phone number?
Mason: LMAO!
-
Post interview thoughts: Before the interview I knew Mason only by his reputation as an aggressive player with a long list of resets. My opinion of Mason was that of a player that picked on smaller players and laughed about it. After finishing the interview, I felt I had learned a lot, and perhaps I had not judged Mason fairly. Should a player be deemed a bully in all cases? I think not. Mason set a goal, and reached it. He did it as a solo player, and attempted to minimize impacts on other players in the process. I can easily imagine crossing paths with many arrogant players (we all know the type) while attempting to reach such a goal, and in the process Mason decided to make an example of them. Mason, I salute your achievements.

Many of you know this name from his forum posts. I had the pleasure of getting to know the history of the Mobber Belial. The great news is Belial has agreed to live Q&A Friday night in our news room. Join us tonight at 9:00 eastern standard time. Now let's see how Belial started and how it came to a close.
Letโs go to day 1, Why did you download TW?
I was looking around at gps games and found "my town" but before I downloaded it I was checking the reviews and on them was a recommendation for TW as a more action packed version of the same concept. I ended up never even trying "my town" but got TW instead
-
How long did it take to get into it, or should I say to pass the noob stage?
Well when I started, most of the west coast neighborhoods were dead. When I went to visit my girfriend who lives 50 miles away I found a dead account (inactive player). all over her neighborhood. He gave me my first captures and an introduction into income mechanics. All in all I became a mid sized player within 3 weeks.
What was your first real fight, were they to fight back or did they cap you first?
There were lots of small fights but what I'd call the first real fight was when Bellaitalliana, ~matt~ and myself declared war on jr ewing - the capo of LA. He had a lot of grudges but the reason we went after him was that he was an aging OG and we were up and coming contenders, so we took him out because he was big and he was there.
-
What was the next chapter in your story - LAW yet?
Hmm LAW was towards the end of my career and didn't last long. I was a minor player in BAIC versus LAW. I chased some around LBC and LA mainly leading to ambushes, and held off Das and kept Das from getting involved of course.
Tell me about BAIC, what's it stand for, how did you get involved there?
BAIC stands for Bay Area Income Chain. They first got wind of me during the previously mentioned war in LA. BellaItalliana was one of the founding members so whenever one of our actions had a lack of people we'd call on BAIC. Naturally since they were helping me, favors were returned. At one point after helping Bellaitalliana and BAIC with some trouble it just became the natural next step to actually attempt to join. So i made the offer and with a split vote decision they offered me a slot.
-
What's the best memory of BAIC, and how did it end?
My best memory in BAIC is by far Leprechaun. That guy was awesome so funny, so much guts, and so much spirit. I loved BAIC and still love the people there but I'm quirky and personalities didn't mesh. About 4 months after I'd joined BAIC I was asked to leave. I didn't take it well to say the least. My actions that followed and the friendships it strained make up most of my regrets in tw.
What happened next after BAIC?
Yeah, LAW came after BAIC. I had actually just left BAIC as the LAW battle was beginning. After BAIC it was primarily fights against Das and Manganelli. I won most of the fights with Nelli, and I ended up coming out about even on wins and losses against Das.
Tell me about LAW how did that start?
As I said it was mainly a BAIC action and I'd already left BAIC. I believe it was mainly due to disagreements between LAW and Leprechaun.

THE GOD OF WAR Days - can u explain that for me?
Coming into my frist summer in tw i had gotten my first of many sourts of boredom. i decided i was too nice and my areas were too quiet. i was going to 'gasface' and fight war for the sake of war. After deliberation i came with the name god of war. from there i captured everyone everywhere i had turf. small player large player didnt matter if i could cap you i did just that.
Anyone who was captured would receive the message waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!! (flame emoji). Lol it actually became a tw catchphrase for several months before it died down
What was the height of LAW?
LAW was mainly an east coast alliance that came to power as CMS broke up. Although they did come to the west coast with the advent of airports they were never the dominant power here.
BEST LAW fight?
Chasing down Swamp Donkey I guess. As I said before I was just a minor player in this engagement.
-
What was the direction of TW, before you left?
I personally find TW was going and from what I hear is still going the direction of the big spender. I myself spent a lot on TW, but I still feel the free player deserves an equal chance
Thanks Belial, you have certainly left a lasting mark on TW. A reminder to the community to join us tonight at 9pm for live Q and A with Bel.

Approximately 3 weeks ago, the first Turf Tales News Tournament came to a close. The tourney was a โwho can cap the mostโ contest, with the winner picking a story of their choice or having a personal interview. Pentic won the tournament by a landslide, capping over 500 turf in a week. Penticโs story request is being investigated โ and will be written and posted as soon as possible.
During the tournament, knowing the difficulty of Penticโs story request, I decided that second place would also get a story. 4horse easily took second, capping near 400 turfs. What made 4horseโs achievement special, in my opinion, is that he capped those turf as a solo player, without the help of builders or alliances. He simply attacked players around him. -
On October 11, 2013, Brizz and Fallacy sat down with the controversial player to gain some insight into the man behind the ๐.
Brizz: How long have you been playing Turf Wars?
4Horse: Will be two years December 27th.
Brizz: In that time, youโve earned quite a reputation for being a bit of a bad boy. You first garnered attention after your split from Capo. Care to tell us a bit about that split?
4Horse: I split because I wanted to be on my own. Capo kinda restricted me from being who I wanted to be in TW.
Brizz: And what about other alliances? Have you tried to participate in any other TW alliances?
-
4Horse: I wanted to stand up for my name. Iโve tried BLS. M@DF@M.
Brizz: And what happened with those alliances?
Fal: Letโs not forget FFS.4Horse: Yes, FFS. Too trendy for me, I guess.
Brizz: In addition to your fickle behaviors towards alliances, youโve become famous for cussing at people and starting fights. What do you think causes that?
4Horse: I like to challenge others and to make them feel uncomfortable while Iโm doing it. Bringing out the anger in others really shows me who they are on the map.
Fal: How has drinking effected your game?Do you have a drinking problem?
4Horse: I like to shake things up a bit. Drinking or not, doesn't make a difference. I get bored sometimes. lol.. nothing personal with anyone. I don't think I drink enough to have a problem.
-
Brizz: Thereโs definitely another side to you, though, and at times you can be a very friendly guy. Who would you say are a few of the people youโre closest to in TW?
4Horse: Brizz, youโre my favorite. I like getting close to my enemies.
Brizz: Aww, thanks (I think). Now, when you were first getting started, was there anyone who helped you or acted as a mentor to you?
4Horse: Maladosteo was my
mentor.Brizz: In what ways did he mentor you?
4Horse: He showed me how to play the game. He helped me with a bully.
Fal: how many turf did u cap during the tourny? Did u get any grief over it?
4horse: I think it was around 390. Some complained, some hit back. I took a little from everyone in various places.
Fal: any final words?
4horse: just to let everyone know I won't be joining any cap tourneys for a while. So please don't worry if you see me in a town next to you ๐

MOB POLITICS
In this wild game we play, Turf Wars, there are written and unwritten rules. With the creation of โThe Allianceโ we as players have created what I am referring to as MOB POLITICS. We all follow the Turf Wars Law AKA โNickโ. The rules set forth by the game that we must work within are what I am calling the Turf Wars Law. As with all rules, they can be broken and are broken all the time. From spoofing to using auto punchers there are many ways to cheat the system. Sometimes youโre caught by the law AKA โNickโ and banned, reset, or punished somehow and sometimes you are caught by the community and punished by them. Either way we as players must or โtryโ to work within these rules: but there is another set of unwritten rules that I believe most players follow.
-
In our Turf Wars community from early on, most of us are taught some unwritten rules about the game. The first and most common I think is DONโT CAP INACTIVE PLAYERS OR HURT AREA INCOME. In a nut shell this unwritten rule protects our income and is something alot of Noobs learn the hard way. Another unwritten rule is about how you conduct yourself in PM and the forum. The community will not put up with disrespectful or rude behavior. We seem to unite at times to take out the D****, the just uncalled for behavior. This is something that is case by case, of course some get away with more than others.
The last unwritten rule I want to talk about is very debatable. I remember being told often as a little mob "LOOT IS FAIR GAME ." I want to leave this topic for debate in the news room. Is LOOT truly fair game or is there nothing truly behind this statement or is there a set of rules behind the rule?
-
Even with the written and unwritten rules there is a different set of laws or politics we have also brought to the game. I think of it like this, the world is our city and this city is divided into MOB FAMILYโS. Like many cities around the world, this is true. Many families control the city and work as close as they can to each other without stepping on toes or trying not to step on toes. There are friendly families or allies that help each other out. There are enemy families that fight nonstop. Within that madness there are also independent contractors as well that do as they please. This dynamic of friend/foe/neutral can sure cause some confusion. Just like in any real Turf War there are ups and downs, wins and losses and most of all trials and tribulations.
-
The challenge we face within the Mob Politics and being friends and enemies is maintaining relationships. Friendships (or allies) are made every day and on the flip side destroyed every day. Within a world of who is friends with whom, and who supports who and who is fighting who, lines get blurry. One day you will think a certain group has your back till that relationship is tested. With alliances comes the biggest challenge. Diplomacy vs. aggression is the question here. When one member of an alliance does something to upset another, what politics determine how to react to it. We can only hope our friends or allies reach out diplomatically but the fact of the matter is that this doesnโt always happen. There is what I call the โTAKE YOUR LICKS POLICYโ where the aggressive approach is used. The alliance being hit has the choice to fight back or take their licks.
-
This is just a fact of life: not everyone can solve issues with words and instead of fist fights, we use the fight or cap button. Seems to me that the Turf Wars will never end till the game ends and until it does
The Mafia based GPS game TURF WARS lives up to its name. We all fight for our spot on the map whether it be one city, one country, or the world. Most of us do it within the written, unwritten, and political rules. In this game we live and die by our friendships/allies/enemies. Just as in real life a lot of times it comes down to who you know and then it comes down to do they like you.-M@d

Self Help 101
Why Capping Inactive Players Is Frowned Upon
So many times we see that newer players are capping inactive players in their area. Capping inactive players is widely frowned upon for the following reason: It affects the income of the area. You need to have 10 different players in the area to make max income on a turf ($53.6k) Remember, once you cap an inactive player, that turf will not be replanted, which may affect the income of all those nearby. The other reason is that a larger player may be taxing that turf you want to cap. Players tend to get a little upset when their income drops. If you cap a turf that a bigger player is taxing, be prepared for the consequences. It's your game, play how you want. I only bring this up as I see a lot of players asking why or being told that capping inactives is a bad thing.
-
So, how do you know if a player is active or not? A few things you can do: PM the player and ask them if they are active, Give them a fair time to respond. Look to see when their last turf was planted/capped.
Hyena has written a post in the help and strategy forum that explains how to tell if a player is inactive. Mystery has also listed ways to tell if a player is inactive on turfwarswiki.com, search "inactive". Its an educational read and worth the few minutes it takes to read.
Bottom line is this: the general consensus (please note I said general, as there are players who do not agree) is that's it's better to tax an inactive player than cap them. If you cap an inactive that affects the income of somebody bigger than you, be prepared for the repercussions.
Next weeks Self Help lesson: what to do when somebody caps your turf.Happy Turfing!

The Rumor Mill
Oh my Stars!
Rumors are buzzing regarding the pending nuptials between two Turf Warriors. Well known veteran player Addi has accepted an engagement proposal from former big player Puncyclockface (old timer, no longer active). By way of background, a couple years ago Addi relocated from Louisiana to Denver in order to be with Puncy after they met and bonded through the game.
Turf Tales News and the entire Turf Wars community wishes the two all the best on their future union.Toughguy is solo, no more.
Toughguy has tagged back up, electing to rejoin The Commission alliance. This comes after a string of alliance movements which started with the collapse of pax, a departure from TC and more recently leaving the TW stars.

Tech ๏ธปโณใ=ไธ hangs them up
Tech has quietly announce his retirement. The 38k middleweight has hung up his Tommie's and decided to pack in his TW career. Tech raised eyebrows several months ago when he joined the ใCAPOใ alliance, after fighting for many months along side TWFC and their allies.
I will remember Tech as a worthy adversary. Tech and I had nearly identical accounts about a year ago, and often found ourselves pitted against each other. Tech rarely slept during those days and made it particularly difficult to cap. Techs in game name has change to Game ๏ธปโณใ=ไธ Over. Although not a reset - it certainly points towards the end for him. Best wishes old friend.
