Cover story: Turf Wars Fight Club - A History
A sub-plot that has been playing out over the past 6 months. It is the story of the slow decay of what was once the games most powerful alliance, Turf Wars Fight Club (TWFC). Today TWFC finds itself surrounded by enemies with few allies to turn to for support. As London, the once impenetrable TWFC base of operations, fell, so to have many of their most notable members retired, reset or left the alliance for greener pastures. Turf Tales News caught up with former and current members, including Shaggly Razors, Smasher and Carver, to discuss the achievements, the losses and the current status of TWFC. -
FAL: How did it all start?
Smasher: When I first started the game, I was lucky enough to come across a player named Britfurry. Brit taught me the game. He showed me how to punch, hop and fight. Eventually the two of us came across a player named Shaggly Razors who is one mean fella.
Shags: The three of us, Brit, Smasher and I, started TWFC around mid 2010. We had just finished the first London Wars against tyresius and nigga. They were huge 4k players at the time. TWFC was formed to obliterate anyone who annoyed us. At the time there weren’t really any alliances around, and certainly nothing comparable to our size. All of the biggest players in the UK began to join our alliance. -
FAL: How did you guys recruit? Was it an open invite?
Carver: I joined TWFC about 2 months after it was formed. At the time it contained 15 or 20 of the UK’s biggest and best players and was known for organization and supporting their members. TWFC had a reputation that if anyone targeted any of their members, then the entire alliance would unite and ensure the enemy was capped as much as possible. When I was recruited, TWFC was actively looking for committed players. Membership was not handed out, it had to be earned by helping other members. Having a growing mob and being mobile was particularly important in those days, as it was expected that you would assist any TWFC member that had an issue with another player. Most members had to earn their way in by showing their commitment on the battlefield. -
FAL: Tell us more about those early, developing days of TWFC
Smasher: Following the London Wars, TWFC continued to expand, both in members and in territory. We were an aggressive alliance, often hoping to towns and cities looking to expand our domain. Eventually other players, often those players we victimised, began to band together. Death Before Reset (DBR) was eventually formed to try to stop our expansion and aggression.
FAL: TWFC vs. DBR is perhaps the games longest running and best know conflict. Can you tell us a little more about DBR? -
Shags: We lost some of our members when they left to start DBR. Rhino will say he left because he didn’t like the aggressive ways of TWFC. Rhino was one of the largest players at the time, and started DBR to combat the effects that twfc was having (resetting players). In my opinion, TWFC only went after deserving bullies who picked on our members. Although TWFC got painted as the bad guys all along, the fact is DBR was much worse. There is deep seated hatred between both groups.
In those early days, DBR and TWFC probably had a 50/50 split in terms of territory. DBR held the majority of the north, while TWFC was primarily southern based. With the entry of players like Hardcore, Partyboy, Carver, as well as others, we soon had northern players as well. The battles were similar to the ones today although range wasn’t around so sniping wasn’t the main tactic like it is today. The battles were more focused on sneaky stuff, like hiding turf, having sub level 50 players and low influence uncapables. -
FAL: The use of hidden pins is still a well known and used battle tactic. But low influence uncapables predates my time and many others as well. Can you expand a bit on this? and how it impacted those early days?
Carver: The concept back then was basically to drop your influence low enough so that you became uncapable. It wasn't uncommon for very large players to do this on war fronts. They would simply tear down turf or drop them down to 1 inf. pins, bringing their overall influence down as low as possible. Then they would proceed to get coverage on a war line all the while the enemy could not cap them. When the turf’s went live chaos would ensue. -
Shags: DBR pioneered the use of low influence uncapables. They also pioneered the use of Sub level 50 uncapables, although they would claim otherwise. In any case, both sides used the tactics to their advantage. These strategies played a major role during our wars. People always ask me why I have so many random pins laying around. I can tell you why. In a war many years ago, I dropped all my turf to pins. That’s 2000 turf. It took about 30 hours and afterwards I could not fathom the idea of inflating them back up. So – thats why I have so many random pins out there.
FAL: Tell me about some of the greatest achievements of TWFC -
Carver: There were many epic battles, hard to cover them all. One great achievement of TWFC was the taking of London Heathrow Airport. Back when the airports were first announced DBR and TWFC made an agreement to take and control LHR together to make sure that Brits could fly abroad if they wanted to. Unfortunately the hatred between the groups could not be contained. Late one night DBR tried to take the airport. TWFC fought back hard during the following weeks, eventually taking and holding LHR for approximately 2 years.
Shags: As Carver said, it is a long list. Newcaslte, Antrim, Berlin, Hamburg; as well as many more. Australia is also worth mention as we had a contingent fight a very long and hard fight there against multiple alliances. -
FAL: Who won the DBR vs TWFC war?
Shags: I don’t think there is an easy answer to that question. At one point TWFC was allied with CMS, Borg, and LAW. During that time DBR was essentially knocked out of everywhere. Then Havoc and the stars joined the DBR side and the Borg switched sides as well. This continued. LAW broke up, and other groups began to join the side against TWFC. Eventually we were left with few allies (who had their own battles) and with lots of enemies. At the same time, FUA switched sides and now fights with us. Keep in mind most of FUA are former DBR players. In the end, it is hard to say that it was DBR fighting TWFC anymore
FAL: Tell us about the decline of TWFC. -
Shags: Just a sheer lack of allies and too many enemies. We also suffered from a lack of rangers. Although we had some, we could not match the numbers that were brought to the field from what is commonly called “the world alliance”. Many of ours were more part time and could not put in the same time and dedication that would be needed to fight the numbers of the enemy alliances.
Carver: As Shags noted, it was too many enemies, not enough allies. In addition to the enemies he outlined, we were also fighting Flames and Capo on new fronts. I think TWFC did a good job adjusting to the gameplay. We recruited some new high quality players, but we were always still outnumbered. In hindsight we should have truced with some alliances and focused on only certain areas to remain competitive. Instead we kept fighting everyone. Some of our members retired or reset due to real life circumstances or boredom which meant the remaining group had to rely heavily on our most committed members. -
FAL: I would have to agree that momentum has not been on your side for some time. While your enemy alliances were growing and getting stronger, TWFC was losing high profile members. Things appear to be at rock bottom. So let me ask you, does TWFC still exist?
Smasher: Not for me. The new TWFC from the last year are all muppets. I am no longer with them, I am on my own.
Carver: I can’t really answer that as I haven’t played the game for a while. If it does still exist, it definitely isn’t the force it once was.
Shags: It has been difficult these past months. Truth is a lot of players are tired. My loyalties have always run deep. As long as there is a group out there claiming they are TWFC, ill fight for them. -
Author’s notes: It was no easy task to track down players, conduct interviews and put this article together. Although I think the article provides some insight, it does not even begin to scratch the surface of the vast history of such an old and historic alliance. After conducting the interviews and writing the article, I reflected on the general mood of the whole experience, which I can only describe as dark. Smasher is now the outcast of the alliance he helped start. Carver followed many before him by resetting his account, and now regrets his decision and wishes he could come back to the game. My impressions of Shags was of a player that has seen it all and done it all and is ready for a change, however, he remains trapped by loyalties and allegiances that only those "old warrior" types will truly understand.

The fall of CMS Island.
Many months ago Nick announced the opening of a number of new airports. Included in that list was Shanghai. On launch day, as the different alliances rushed to claim new airports, CMS along with allied groups, such as Certusd crew, focused their efforts on Shanghai. Over the following months CMS and their allies proceeded to chase and evict any unwanted players, eventually claiming Shanghai as their own. Shanghai, and the island just north of the airport, would continue to grow, eventually becoming a massive safe zone of turf and loot for CMS and their allies. -
[Fast Forward to today] After removing CMS and TWFC from Los Angeles, Minnesota, and Hong Kong, several alliances including BAIC, Stars, TC, and other allies descended on the CMS Holy Grail of Shanghai. Capitalizing on the stated retirements and actual inactivity of several CMS members, an assault was made on the airport, which was met with some resistance from some CMS and allies. Several CMS members and allies came out of retirement and attempted to completely fill their income generating island of around 20,000 turf.
-
Many unsuccessful attempts were made by BAIC & friends to gain a foothold on the island. Eventually Chucky Pancamo finally managed to hold a turf for 24 hours. Pancamo was able to capture several hundred turf before Cromag, Xambler, Biker 1% and Beim bought weapons, started vendettas, and enlisted the aid of friends who had benefitted from the income generating island. Macas DemonD, Mim, pentic and luca Brasi and OU812 quickly joined Pancamo on the island, and after several days of intense fighting, healing, vendettas and counter vendettas, even an occasional cap from JB Books (formerly Big Jake), Pancamo, Macas, and OU812 were able to remove everyone from the island except Sinister Vtec, who still holds thousands of turf there.
-
Most of the CMS who were previously retired or inactive sold weapons again and conceded the main island. Two smaller islands to the north and south of the main island appeared to be impenetrable, but as anyone can see, are now held by BAIC and allies (and one player with 10 mob who cannot be capped). Details on how those islands were taken were not disclosed.
-
Pancamo was quick to credit the support and fighting prowess of Macas, OU812, Petinc, Mim, Luca Brassi, Sour, and numerous others without whom he never would have had the opportunity or survived long enough to make any progress. He also pointed out that the fact that many of the strongest opponents no longer play or fight with the passion that once made them some of the toughest in the game, and several do not play at all. So when asked if "victory" is as sweet against opponents that aren't fighting fully, he said "Of course we benefitted from their lack of effort. I give credit to those who did come back, arm up, and fight. But just because half the other team walks off the field with minutes left to play, is our team obligated to stop playing to win?"

Self Help 101
The Art of Code Punching
Growing your mob is most likely the piece of advice most often given by veteran players to newcomers. Here is the best way to do this. Head to invitecodematrix.com and start your free account. Find the Turf Wars tab and get started. ALWAYS do temp codes first, and do them on a daily basis. After you have completed the list of temps, go to regular codes. Here you can choose which way you want to "filter" the codes. Some people like to do it by shorter to longer codes, some like only alpha or numerical
-
I have found that for the best return rate, filter codes by date added. The most recent codes will appear first. Make sure you also check the "yes" to hide used codes. You can choose to show 25, 50 or 100 codes per page (found at the bottom of the screen). Once you have entered all the codes, hit the "check all codes" tab and continue on. This may seem like a tedious task, but it is the only effective way to continue to grow your mob! If you need some motivation, take advantage of the new tournaments option in turf wars and join a mob race!

HOW TO PLAY TURF WARS!
A good friend of mine controller once told me in the beginning of my turf wars career, "turf wars is what u make it". At the time I did not put much thought into it but then just recently realized how epic that statement is. I began to think of all the different ways people play the game. From small town 1 on 1 local wars, to capo or influence hunters to large scale trench war fair and so much in between what an amazing game we play. As a community we have taken circles, GPS, a mafia theme, and a chat app and created M@DNESS. So in answer to the articles title, possibilities are fairly endless. Lets take a look at some different ways people play TW and how the games evolution has effected that.
-
THE NOOB: I think back to the day I downloaded Turf Wars. So new and so blind to the possibilities we all have created. Many never make it out of THE NOOB stage ether quitting before to long or just not being privy to the possibilities stick to the basics. Running missions, laying turf where they can, some punching codes and having small local spats normally with fellow noobs. I have been involved in my share if helping noobs find there way. I once helped 3 interesting Mobbers with a spat, the funny part is there names Mr Puf, Mr Scruff, and Mr Fluf (you can't make that up I have messages saved). Fighting for a capo, 1 lost loot or not fighting at all just growing there bank and profile are common traits of a noob. Seems it takes someone to let the noob in on the "bigger picture", someone to open the door to alliances, palringo, and this crazy social experiment of ours. Now some noobs stay a noob, some get there break but there is another things noobs seem to do.
-
I will put it this way THE TURF WARS COMMUNITY WILL NOT PUT UP WITH DISRESPECTFUL OR MOUTHY NOOBS, and for some reason they always find FREEMASON'S wall LOL!
THE BEGINNING: For those of us fortunate or unfortunate to have gained access to the Turf Wars craziness "WHAT A RIDE IT IS". In this phase there are quite a few ways people play. I believe the easiest way to explain this is to explain different types of alliances and there basic approach to the game. Some players do take it solo but the alliance seems to dictate most play on the map. Keep in mind these are generalizations and do very from alliance to alliance.
-
NON FIGHTERS: Some alliances take a defensive none aggressive more political approach to the game. Alliances like this seem to be driven by income, turf count, mob or something other than war. They are content staying out of the way of major conflict and prefer a peaceful resolution to problems. These alliances are normal a local group and don't typically spread there wings to far.
DEFENDERS: The defender alliances are more of the police of the game. Defender alliances defend the little man and stick up for those they feel need a hand. Not afraid to fight but selective on who they do battle with. These alliance share income, turf count and mob as important goals in game just like non fighters. Defender alliance can be any size and cover little or much of the map.
-
FIGHTERS: I hear this allot "The game is called Turf WARS not turf HUGGERS" or some sort of similar wording. These alliances enjoy the battlefield! There many types of war in game. Trench war on the front lines limit capping for days, open field battle, eviction war, personal battle brought to the map and everything in between. War brings alliances together and tears them down, it builds friendships and destroys relationships. Some alliances and players can keep it just a game, some take things very personal. All this adds up to heated battles fought, won, lost and survived by the FIGHTERS of the game.
-
CHAOS FACTOR: With anything in life there is always some chaos. Some Mobber's love the battle some love to start the battle. I had a chat the other day with a nameless mobber. He asked "why do you have to have a reason to fight just fight its fun". Personally I can't get into the fight unless it's for a reason not just to fight and win. I did realize though that some of us just like to fight. As long as there are spots to cap and chaos to be made these players will be around.
I PLAY PAL: There is one more player type, these players claim to play turf wars but they are just to social to ever get map work done.
To sum things up the above is obviously not all the ways people play TW. With that being said it is the combined contribution of all types of playing styles that make this game of our great. Without any single group the dynamic would not be the same and the game we call TURF WARS would not be as over complicated and easy as we have made it.

Turf Tales moves to Palringo only distribution?
Discussions are underway to explore the option of palringo only distribution of the Turf Tales news. The potential switch is motivated by forum posting rules which regulate the number of posts per minute, that equates to roughly 1 hour of time to post the publication. Multiple requests to support for a temporary reprieve from the forum posting rule were not responded to.
Submit your opinion on the potential switch - comment in favor or in opposition by replying to this thread.
