I wish I were making it up, but apparently one of Airbus' engineers told a German magazine that it's practically possible today to make the plane's fuselage out of material that could be made transparent at the flip of a switch. From our New York Post story:

The extraordinary design would allow travelers to look down on cities and landscapes thousands of feet below or gaze up at the heavens, giving them the sensation of floating unassisted through the sky.
While the proposal might seem far-fetched, it is one of a number of plans being considered by engineers at the European aerospace giant.

"Passengers in an airplane like this would experience flight in a completely new way," Airbus' head of research and technology, Axel Krein, told the German news magazine.

Wow. I don't think people could handle it. Had a friend that works for airbus for a number of years. He would NEVER fly on an airbus plane

I'm guessing there would be a lot of stained seats on those flights.

I think it would be cool though...but then again, I've jumped out of perfectly good airplanes.
