Download speeds dropping??

Hey everyone! Hows it going?
You guys are often really good with tech stuff. I am trying to download ubuntu on my mac and my download speeds drop horribly during download. It starts off at about 200 kps (i think thats what its measured in haha) and says it will only take 10 minutes. Then it starts to drop down as time goes on, and at this point im a quarter way through download and its at 9 kps and it says 19 hours until finished.

If it helps my grandparents have comcast and an old u.s. robotics router and cisco modem (or maybe the other way around). Just as an idea, my 3G is faster than their internet.

Well, to start how many devices are connected to the router? Are you downloading p2p? If so it could be the seeders to leechers ratio. Do you know the advertised speed your grandparents are paying for?

I always do better with the torrents of the Linux distros.

That's how my Linux downloads all were, it's just cause it's pulling all these files from 1st, 2nd, and 3rd party sources, it's nothing to be worried about it, and in my opinion, the best Linux for a Mac would have to be Fedora 18, I've done a lot of different Linux distros on my Mac and Chromebook, and Fedora's been the cleanest so far, yeah Ubuntu's nice and all, but ever since Ubuntu 10.4 I've had all sorts of screw ups with it. Nice to see you won't be running that piece of crap Mac OS..

So i just went back after letting it download all night, i seem to have been kicked off their wifi. Is this comcast's doing or just something wrong? I have it connected through airport but i also plugged an ethernet cord into the router and my computer to try to boost speeds.

You could find yourself a download manager.... a good one will download from all the parts at the same time, a decent decent one downloads from 4-8. Can increase speeds 200-400% so its likely to be done before it drops.
Do a little research though, and dont pick one thats a virus.
since I'm not in access of the one I use right now, I can't tell you what it is :/
