Anyone have any engineering expertise?
Forums › General Discussion › Anyone have any engineering expertise?-
I'm coming to the stage where I need to be looking at a career, I'm pretty sure I want to be an engineer, but as I'm sure you already know, it's a very broad subject. So what I'm asking, what is a good and reliable route to take? Essential qualifications? From what I know so far, I would like to be a nuclear engineer, is this job very interesting? And can I progress?
I'd appreciate any input, good or bad, but it would really help if someone could give me some advice that comes from experience. 👍 -
Sanitation engineering is where it's at. It's a shitty job... Literally.

I'm a gas engineer(fixing boilers),a damn good job, nice wage and everydays different...alot better than when i was an electrical engineer,on both counts slightly different to a nuclear engineer😉
-
Yeah I was speaking to someone and they said its great pay good career but you have to get over the unpleasantness of the whole thing 💩

From what I understand its easy to switch around? So would it be possible to gain experience in one field and then swap?I'm a gas engineer(fixing boilers),a damn good job, nice wage and everydays different...alot better than when i was an electrical engineer,on both counts slightly different to a nuclear engineer😉

The difference in the 2 jobs were like black and white,I had to start from scratch when I trained to be a gas engineer...I trained with British gas and have to say the training was top notch. I also took qualifications to try my hand at electronic engineering...that was way over my head and melted my brain lol

I'm a little scared about the workload and whether I could understand it :L and also having a job that I don't enjoy 😞 but I'm trying to get as much work experience as I can 👍The difference in the 2 jobs were like black and white,I had to start from scratch when I trained to be a gas engineer...I trained with British gas and have to say the training was top notch. I don't see jobsite advertising for many nuclear engineers so I'm guessing its quite a niche career and possibly only available for those with years of experience or a top rate educational background.
Engineering in general (elecrtrical, mechanical etc) are well paid and in demand but like rud said "are black and white". Experience in any role will have it's advantage when trying to switch, however that doesn't mean you won't require training from the ground up. Internships are a great way to get into the profession of choice -
Perhaps environmental engineering? Going "green" is an important part of many industries & corporations. As far as I know, clean energy and technology will be a growing job market soon.

electro chemical engineer... The science is always challenging and most days just pisses me off. Usually the chemistry changes before I can even fix what it started as.

I'm studying to be a structural engineer. It's basically carpentry clashed with design. I love building!

I did drafting (essentially architecture) for two years. There wasn't a real lot of engineering involved for me personally, but it had the potential. My boss's brother is/was a mechanical engineer at a local power plant and he was on $150 per hour at the time.
Engineering is an interesting job with extremely good pay for anyone who is good at it - my problem personally was that I didn't like the amount of desk work involved. If you can cope with being chained to a desk for 80% of your working hours, then it's an excellent career choice.Just my 2c worth👍

Sustainable technology is the future so do whatever takes you down this path.

Thanks for the input everyone, it seems I need to do even more research 😝
