Just thought I'd ask it here...hope someone can help.
I tried starting my 98 neon and it wont engage. I get the chimes and lights on dash as wrll as hear a click but then nothing. Doesnt even attempt to turn over. Starter is fairly new and yes I have gas in the tank. 😃 Figured someone out there might know a thing or two to help. Thanks in advance....👍👍👍👍 -
Your cooling sensor may be faulty , other words your car may think its too hot too start . So it just ticks off . Just a thought mate 👍👍

Have you checked the battery. My car did the same last month and replaced the battery. Problem fixed.

I think the problem is the "98 Neon" part
-
Battery. Or a connector or terminal for it. Check for corrosion

X2 on what Grimm said. Check the terminals for corrosion and take the battery to autozone. They will do a free check and charge on your battery.Battery. Or a connector or terminal for it. Check for corrosion

Even though you have power for the lights, etc, you need a good bit if amperage to turn it over. Most likely there is not enough juice to get it going.
Get in the car, turn on your lights, and then turn the key. Do the lights go completely off or almost completely off.
If so, do like mentioned above. Disconnect the battery. Clean the terminals. Connect and try again. No love? Get it jump started. If it's a battery issue it will start on a jump. Drive it to the auto parts store. Don't turn it off until you get there.

Did you try turning it off and back on again. . . . .

Sounds like your flux capacitor. Just start removing bolts, you'll know when you find it. 👍

Do modern cars still have alternators? Your description sounds like a faulty alternator I had on a car but it was a good 20 years ago

If it was alternator he more than likely wouldn't get dash lights and accessories. All that runs off of the alternator until it goes out. Then runs off the battery until its drained.Do modern cars still have alternators? Your description sounds like a faulty alternator I had on a car but it was a good 20 years ago

Dodge is notorious for electrical issues. Scrap it for weight price and get a Honda del sol 😜

Do u have a testlight ? If so check green wire at starter while someone turns key if light lights starter is bad or the ground down by the starter is loose or corroded , pm me and I'll try to help ya out farther if you want , ✌out

My best guess is you need to replace your piston return springs. Quick, easy and cheap just like my women.

I may be wrong. But doesn't it all run off the battery but the alternator is basically the battery charger when it's running?tall beaver wrote:

Also check your muffler bearing. Those go out on the Dodge Neons all the time.

Yup. This was my second guess after the piston return springs. Could be either one. Also check your muffler bearing. Those go out on the Dodge Neons all the time.

Yeah....definately hit it on the nose Funky....damn 1st gen Neons suck. But no car payment, good on gas, and a great $650 fix for the $5k engine issues I had with my last car.....I think the problem is the "98 Neon" part

No that's correct. However the alternator powers the things like dash lights and radio when you turn the car on in accessory mode. So if the alternator is dead he wouldn't have those things. Or they'd come on but be very dim and flicker. Then fade out.༺☠Ꮹཞ༏ཀཀ☠༻ wrote:

You said you recently replaced the starter...did you get a new OEM starter or a rebuilt one (like the sort you would find at your local Autozone, Advance Auto, etc.)? The rebuilt starters are notorious for giving out quickly. This is also something most parts stores can test for you for free.

Check fuses and relays, could be fuel related.
-
Climb underneath it and tap the starter gently with a hammer could be the solenoid as your tapping have someone start it please make sure it is not in gear and the E brake is on should start
