I live about 50 miles from West and we felt the aftershock in our house.
My wife has a sorority sister that lives there. She was in her car watching the fire when the explosion occurred. It blew out the windows in her car and even right now, she is able to hear very little. They said that she is in a bit if shock.
She told my wife, over Facebook, that her mom's house and her brother's house are completely leveled to the ground. Both of their houses were within 500 feet of the plant.
One of my teachers has a husband that works for the Environmental Protection Agency and he has been called to go down to West around lunch time. The word is, it supposedly looks like a war zone in the downtown area.

Holy crap! I wasn't really expecting that.
I've not heard anything about this (guess its not hit the UK). Were there many casualties/injured or had everyone been evacuated? What started it?
Hope everyone is okay.

That video left me genuinely stunned - something that doesn't happen often.
What a horribly devastating event. I hope there were zero/few casualties and my thoughts go out to anyone hurt by it 🙏
-
5 to 15 killed as of right now. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 160 hurt. Many people still missing.
-
Ay, I just read the report. Truly devastating.

They are not allowed to head back in to the area just yet until the site has been assessed. Local areas are setting up to donate blood and supplies.

How is a volatile chemical plant allowed to be in such close proximity to a residential area? Does Texas not believe in zoning laws?

Chemical plant was there first in this case I believe. We do still allow people to live where they want in Texas. Kind of like how other states let folks live on the beach or near trees that burn real easy. How is a volatile chemical plant allowed to be in such close proximity to a residential area? That puts it into a perspective I had not thought of. I've only seen parts of one video today, I'm guessing the area is not densely populated?
-
Some brother and sister firefighters and emts died in their response to this fire/explosion. RIP.
-
Not real densely populated, think of wide open land that used to be farmland with a house or two every 5 acres or so. But based on that video .5 mile is way to damn close. I also think that plant is a bit outside of town but I could be wrong. Anyhow that matters because TX counties can't do much of anything to restrict zoning. Landowners have to do that in the deeds.

🙏🙏 prayers are with Texas right now.
-
...I am getting (somthing around) 15 dead 160 wounded. That is a lot of hurt families, I've already said some prayers. Is anyone else getting these numbers?
-
Our town( which has blown up several times one of which involved a ship full of fertilizer that destroyed the whole town) is built in an extremely close proximity to a huge refinery complex. Whenever we have leaks, explosions, fires, etc, residential neighborhoods are regularly in danger. But you learn to live with it. Our town has a great emergency planning with top-notch emergency personnel. We understand the risk an choose to live here. The advantages are tax breaks, generous donations from the refineries, and cheaper houses. You take the good with the bad.

Houses miles away had windows shattered
