I read my messages off turf wars to my little boy at night... He now says "Good night daddy, go fuck yourself you shitbag!"

I read every time. Long stories. And he loves it. I'd feel really guilty skipping even once.

Well thank you all , and I'm glad to see parents still taking a little time out for their children. I don't know, I thought for a minute it was a lost art... Or maybe it's just that I watch a lot of children from the same neighborhood and status. ( not meaning to discriminate But that's why we're gonna have a lot more f'd up people in this world... Neglect is terrible.

They're parents from wealthy status I may add

I've been reading to my son more or less regularly since he was born and he's almost 6 now. Now that he's in kindergarten, it's absolutely imperative that we read on a regular basis. At the beginning of the school year, it was always me reading to him & lately, 99% of the time, unless he's really tired, he wants to be the one to read to me.
I'll admit that he likes tv, movies, the Wii, the Leapster & the iPod, but he gets limited use of them & usually only after homework is done. I keep the Wii in the living room & he's not allowed to have a tv in his room right now because I don't want him "hibernating" & becoming disconnected from the family like I did as a teen.
It fascinates me how smart he is. Like his dad said yesterday, he's lucky that he got his smarts from his mom. :)

Thus far, we mostly read Dr. Seuss & a bunch of other kid books & a few nonfiction ones about animals & how things work. I kind of want to see if he could get into something a little deeper, like a chapter book that we could read from everyday. I've never read any of the Harry Potter books, but to those who have, do you think 5-6 is too young to start them?

6 is OK for the first book, but they start to get fairly dark after the third one. If you want to read them all in succession I'd wait a couple more years.

Well my daughter is 9, I use to read to her everyday. One day at a parent teacher night I was asked the same thing, I told her I read to my daughter everyday. The teacher looked kinda shocked and asked me again and if I was sure I got a little agitated then told her yea. She then tells me that my daughter doesn't know how to read. I always showed the book to my daughter and made sure that as I was reading my finger followed with the words. That's how I learned how to read. So yea not always the best thing to do so we ended up getting her a leap pad and now she reads a grade lvl higher. So technology really helps with some kids. Others it's the finger read meathod. Guess you have to wait for the teacher to say whet they need improvement on. But then again that's why teachers are there to teach.

My wife is a doctor, so she gets journals in the mail. Here is a link I googled that is one of the papers she read.4nick8r wrote:
Can you post links to this research? I heard that its not good for a child to watch tv until at least 3 years old. I agree and am trying to get my wife on board. A little statistical information goes a long way with her so it'd be nice to have sources.✂✂ We limit "screen time" (TV, ipad, iphone) for our 3y/o to less than 2 hours a week & 0 screen time for the youngest. The research is in & it really is harmful for developing brains; even the Baby Einstein & educational apps. (Don't hate me. It's science, not my opinion. It's bad enough for kids under 2 that day cares can lose their license if they let kids that age watch TV.)

My parents read Harry Potter to me when I was about the same age, so I say go ahead! I think it'll be a fun experience. 9 years later and I still remember a little from the first book. When I was a kid my parents taught me to read by me reading out loud while they followed along and corrected my mistakes. I think that's the best way to learn to read.
And this 2 year olds with IPads are not going to use them for education, when they turn 5 they'll learn how to download angry birds and become video game addicts. Lol, I got this iPod when I was 14. And i still read for fun

my mum read to us every night we were with her, starting with redwall (I was 6, my sister 3) and moving through the harry potter series. She always sat on the other side of the room from us, so while I learned to read quite early, I'm not sure if that contributed too much. Mainly it was just nice to see her, those 3 chapters a week were the bulk of our maternal contact.
I'm now reading the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes to my 7yo autistic brother, and he loves it. Adventures and Memoirs are good for him as they are shorter stories, so we can do one a night if we start early. I enjoy it, and so does he, and it's good speaking practice for me.

I play classical music on my guitar for my little uncle. He loves it lol.
