I was just wondering if anyone plays? I've just started to get into it and thoroughly enjoying it.

Are you talking about Magic the Gathering? If so, I'm an avid player but mostly play Limited (draft and sealed). Or are you referring to Duels of the Planeswalkers, or something else entirely?

This is a game I just never could get into. I'm sure I'm way off here, but wouldn't you just go out & buy the best cards there is?

Agreed. Time, effort and knowing what you're doing eventually outweighs any money injection.

Agreed. Time, effort and knowing what you're doing eventually outweighs any money injection.
Having the originals sure as hell helps... I mean, c'mon, it wouldn't be worth 5k$ if it wasn't a near essential to competitive play.

There are many different ways to play Magic. I play almost exclusively Limited, meaning I build decks out of cards I've just opened, so I never have to shell out for a Black Lotus. Also, the oldest and most expensive cards aren't legal in Standard, the most popular Constructed format (where you bring a pre-built deck). So it all depends on how you want to play.
