  Yes marketing is a skill! Some people are naturally good at it, others aren't, but everyone needs it. Those who can market themselves well are the ones who end up with the good jobs. And yes, that might mean working 3 half days.

  A huge part of marketing is sales, and if someone can't sell they are setup for a constant uphill battle. It's not about being able to sell used cars. it's selling your boss on why you need a raise, or selling yourself into a good job.

  It's an important skill.

  How about you go to a liberal arts school (e.g. Stanford) and go to one of their specialized branches. Best of both worlds.
