Hi I'm Funky Buffalo and I'm your first writer today. I like canned cheese. On a side note I've decided lamp beats everything on the 1up thread so I'm recruiting as many people as possible to write lamp as a response. The end.

Well, here's a little something you might find interesting (it's more interesting than it seems at the beginning):
Alexander Graham Bell was an immigrant to the United States of America, born in Edinburgh, Scotland. Bell attended the University of London, studying in anatomy and physiology, but he was unable to finish his education when his family moved to Canada after his two other siblings died of tuberculosis. Although nowadays Alexander Graham Bell is most well known for his inventing the telephone, the reason he came to America was to be a teacher of the deaf. His mother was also hard of hearing, and his idea for “electronic speech” actually came to him while visiting her in Canada.
-
However, Bell was a huge supporter of oralism, which required deaf people to abandon the use of sign language and learn how to speak aloud. Sometimes this practice would even resort to teachers tying the hands of their deaf students behind their backs so they could not use sign laguage, which could be the only language they knew. Bell studied the physiology of speech, and used that knowledge to teach his deaf students how to speak aloud and read lips. Bell and other oralists were supporters of eugenics, which wanted to improve the genetic quality of the United States population, and considered the deaf community to be like something foreign and undesirable, and so worked to contain it through the oralist movement. Alexander Graham Bell and other oralists sought to get rid of deaf teachers, deaf residential schools, and even sign language altogether.
-
Even though today most hearing people credit Bell with the invention of the telephone, his name carries a very negative connotation in Deaf Culture as a result of his oralist efforts, and attempts to eradicate Deaf Culture and people.
