Too many fish!
Forums › General Discussion › Too many fish!-
We have a 20 gallon fish tank and just found out at least 3 of the fish are pregnant. These are livebearers and I was told each can have up to 50 fry! The kids can't wait for the fry... They are very excited!
I plan to move them to a seperate tank so they don't get eaten, but then what? Petsmart and Petco won't take them. I don't have a big enough tank to keep all of them. What do I do with all these fish after they are born? And NO, I will not just let the adults eat them all. 😳 -
Sounds like a fish fry to me 😏

depends what type of fish it is, if it's cichlids they will protect there young as lose very little, if it's natural cold water fish, they won't be long in breeding again, if it's tropical well, the toughest fish wins at that one... You have many variables in a tank which prevents fish from breeding, you must have hit the perfect set up, so I would start adjusting, temp, ph etc.. you can phone the local schools and ask if they need any fish, restaurants or local ads??? otherwise, just let nature take its course.

Only thing you can do when you don't have enough space for more tanks and you don't want to let the adult fish eat them is trying to find people who want to buy them or pick them up for free.
That's exactly the reason I don't have fish that breed like hell. -

Lmao, my mom has the Same problem. I bought her 8 gold fish years ago for her pond. That was Generations ago. She usually keeps the babies and releases the parents into a friends larger pond.
-
I had the same problem. Eventually you either have to get another tank or let nature take care of it.
-
Predator fish. Problem solved. You can get one fish and he will eat the entire tank in a couple days.
-
I have a 125 gal that needs more fish. Why don't you just ship them up to me lol
-
Ares - if overnight shipping wasn't so expensive I would take you up on that!
I know I can let nature take its course, but the kids are really excited and I don't want to do that on this first round.
Thanks for the Craigslist and school idea!
The pregnant fish are 2 marigold platy and a silver Molly. I need to get the males their own tank! Lol -
Lol platies and molly's are fast breeders. I have some and I don't have a problem because I have a shark and I think he takes care of most of them. I only ever see one or two babies at a time grow all the way up.
-
My fish had fry once and I got a net you attach to the inside of the tank so they are in the same water but separated. I worked well but they all eventually died after I released them into the full tank.
-
You can divide the tank and put the babies on one side and the adults on the other. Get some tall fake grass for the babies to hide in.

Umm. The lake

Try a small mom and pop pet store. They may take them. I have the same problem and did this. Then I bought a tetra and no more issues. It eats all but the fastest fry.
