Modern medicine pro or con?

Modern medicine allows us to live longer but is it actually bad for us as a society?
-
Do you want to die young? Would you rather live to 60 or 90
-
It's another way for the corporate fat heads to control us. Other then that, I think it's a good thing.

I want to live until I get to old to do anything.

Lol, how do you know an elderly life will bring you misery? I know plenty elderly people who love life and live it well.Jamarkamaulothy wrote:

Without modern medicine surely there's a chance mankind would be extinct by now? What about medicine that's cured such things as plague, polio, tuberculosis etc... to afford more and more people a happy life? These are all modern medicines.

Die young, as in polio at the age of 7? Haha what are you getting at here? I fail to see how being healthy is bad.Jamarkamaulothy wrote:

Mayhem the point is people live too long now because of modern medicine and where are they all going to be in 50 years?

I understand that a lot of elderly folk end up incapable of every day normality but does that mean they should be culled? I don't think medicine is the issue in society, I think it's some people's hatred for old wrinklys. 😄
-
I think it varies from person to person and longevity isn't the only issue. Are vaccines and other methods of eradicating diseases that killed many as children and young adults worth it? I think so. Is the overprescription of antibiotics which leads to potentially life-threatening resistance worth it? In most cases, I think not. We need to be more careful. As for longevity, everyone has their limits and the desires of their family to pay attention to. But with modern medicine it's surprise how much latitude you have at times to simply choose not to be treated any longer and pass peacefully (somewhat) as you choose, but it's a private decision no one can impress on anyone else just because they feel differently.
-
I do think longer life spans do put stresses on communities and economies that we aren't prepared for (I did NOT say we should kill them all). The town I live in is predominantly elderly people and and the population they are dependent upon for help is much smaller than is usually the case. Population studies predicted this for the nation as a whole some time ago and medicine plays a role in it. Baby boomers + good medicine and prosperity. Not hard to figure it out. Now that younger generations are helping them (without regret mind you) it's more work when you're tucking in extras here and there and making facilities and homes accessible in what is a poor community overall.
-
I'm not saying we should kill people off. I'm saying its simple math 200 years ago it was rare for three generations to be alive at the same time, now about 5 is the normal not unheard of for 6. If we keep growing where are we going to go? Move into the farm lands than how are we going to eat? Where is all the fresh water going to come from? M not saying all of you run and kill three people to make a difference I'm asking are you aware or even ever thought about it?
-
Strangely enough, I contemplated a similar thing a little while back. As we all are aware, figures say that the worlds population now exceeds 7bn. Now my train of thought was how many people have been lost to the multitude of military conflicts in recorded history? Had this not been the case, and we lived in a peaceful world, where would we be now in terms of population?
Would we have saved those lives had it been possible at the time? I'm pretty sure we would have.
-
We could also point a finger at teenage pregnancy being a contributing factor of over population. Lesser inhibitions in society as a whole. The normality of having children out of wedlock. In most of the world, sex has become a thing of public interest and celebrated as such, in public. (Not that I'm fussed! 😉) Even just a generation ago, such things were largely taboo.
There are many factors we could say contribute but I don't think medicine designed to save lives should ever be classed in a negative context.

The Earth can support a much larger population than what is currently living on this planet. I also believe that the population will cap off within the next 100 years, maybe even 50. There will be another large population jump but as countries develop it is an observable fact that birth rates drop in said country. Who knows what breakthrough technology we will develop next? I hate to say it but we always manage, wether through technology or social advancements, humans have been able to overcome unsurmountable odds. China implemented birth regulations, western societies value material shit over having expensive ass kids. This era we are in right now is the hightech era, I believe the next era we are going to enter in human advancement will be massive breakthroughs in the medical field. With genetic advancements we pretty much have endless possibilities as a human race. Let's just hope it is used for good!
-
Everything has pros and cons. Doesn't mean they are inherently good or bad. No one would love it more than me and some others like me if there was some way to manipulate the human genome for medical treatment. But we understand so very little about it still. And what might we create in the process? What harm will we do? What about the legalities? And so, so, so much more. Not the least of which is does my 47XY really need to be 46XY like all the other little boys? What's so wrong with him? (Nothing) So why the need to "fix him?"
-
You are very right, there is still so much that we don't understand about genetics. The massive leaps we have taken in genetics in the past short while leads me to believe that we are on the brink of something epic. Possibly the most influential leap humanity has ever taken. Again, I just hop that it is used for good. Let's invent something that is used for good and not just developed by the military for use to kill people. Currently we face a huge issue with genetic patenting, I consider this massively detrimental to society.
-
Allowing corporations to patent a gene is pretty much the first step in a massive corporation swallowing genetics and gaining control over the medical field , in theory. Correct me if I'm wrong but since the courts have allowed genes to be patented large pharmaceutical companies have began patenting disease genes. In effect they own all rights to the gene. All research is controlled by a corporation, if any one wants to do any sort of research, they must pay royalties and operate under whatever regulations and supervision the owning party sets forth. I view this as simply a monopoly on diseases, being able to maximize profits off of patients in need of treatment or parties researching the genes.
-
I read a very interesting book by the late great author Michael Crichton called "Next". With Michael Crichton's amazing writing style I quickly became obsessed with the issue of genetics. Michael always mixed in so many truths, analogies of todays society, and exaggerated truths into his high paced action packed stories that I soon found myself sourcing everything he wrote. I guess I could end my rant as I've been writing so long I probably went way off topic. But yeah medicine is good as long as it is for the people not to profit off of the people or create biological weapons to kill people, which is probably what we will do.
Please correct me if I'm wrong it has been awhile since I have thought about genetics and I'm a little fucked up right now haha -

The interesting thing about fiction (novels and movies) is that they do explore what "could happen." It's the extremes, of course, but still...should a corporation be able to patent a gene and sell its use to others who want to use it to research cures for diseases? Something about that seems wrong. They're not doing it for sunshine, bubbles, and rainbows, either. It's about the bottom line. Not your little bottom.
And I'm all about not outliving my children.

There's assuredly a happy medium. Nobody outright wants to die. But nobody wants to live for the wrong reasons either. There's a balance (just like the ying and yang thingy...🎭 (I know that's not it but for the life of my I couldn't find it!)).
Modern medicine has its place. But just like anything else, it can be taken too far. Everybody has there reasons for living (or dying). And if those reasons are pure, then modern medicine can be a wonderful thing. 🏥 -
Modern Medicine treats young patients as well as old, think about the children with cancer!
