Not working? Volunteer!
Forums › General Discussion › Not working? Volunteer!-
I have received unemployment before, but none of that money came from your taxes. Unless you were my employer immediately prior to my receipt of unemployment. I also did not volunteer during that time. My days were filled with taking ridiculous classes mandated by the state, making multiple job search contacts in my line of work each week, taking care of my kids and house while my wife worked, and taking classes to finish my degree. And of course, figuring out how to pay all my bills or which ones I could skip that month, because unemployment payments are a very insignificant amount of money ($270/wk in Florida). I certainly didn't have the free time to spend at a soup kitchen. I had much more free time when I worked 12-18 hours a day with no weekends off. Not only that, but your employer has to APPROVE your unemployment before you receive it. Unemployment is insurance. Try bitching about welfare, you'll be a little closer to the mark on that one.

New Approach, are you indicating that the funds used for unemployment is not a burden on the people? Believe you me, the is not one thing that is provided by local or fed government that is not subsidized by an American citizen. No such thing as free....

Like I said, no way i can convince anyone on the internet to change their minds, even when presented with solid facts. So go on believing what you want, continue being bitter about things that don't affect you. When the time comes that you need help from the government or other citizens, I hope you get it. I hope people like you don't manage to effect change in our economic stabilisers.New Approach, are you indicating that the funds used for unemployment is not a burden on the people? This entire country is subsidized by the federal government and by American citizens. Even the "free" market is subsidized by the government and always has been. I guarantee you have prospered from the investments of other taxpayers in some way. All of us owe a debt to society, and trust me the benefits far outweigh the burdens even for the most successful among us. It's the whole point of us joining together as a country instead of every man or every tribe for themselves. These are the rules of the game. The dirty little secret is that some form of socialism surrounds you even if you're living in a cabin in the woods.New Approach, are you indicating that the funds used for unemployment is not a burden on the people? So when the money comes from a trust fund supported by current/previous employers that money is not a tax?? Who do you think that employer is? It's not always Ford, GM or a Fortune 500 company that is also heavily subsidized by the Federal Govt, many times its a small business living month to month. That money doesn't come from a pot of gold, and your not paying it with deductions from your check like FICA. Bottom line is I think most agree that the needy deserve help, that's not the issue. The issue is what guidelines and monitoring is in place to assure that those that need help get it and those that don't get weeded out. You know, like if you get a unemployment check you should be drug tested periodically. The guy that has a job does, only fair.

I lost my job about 5 years ago and applied for unemployment. When you are filling out the application they ask dozens of questions, one of them being about do you volunteer your time. I wasn't doing much before that time, but that question got me thinking. And I decided that with all the down time I'm going to have I'd go volunteer some, and said so on the application.
My claim was denied. Why? Because I said I would volunteer my time I couldn't devote enough time to finding a job. That put me in a bind and I ended up getting a crappy job 3 days later doing manual labor with a railroad company to keep my bills paid.
All because. I wanted to help...
