list the following ideals in order of their importance to you. 1 being most important. 10 being least important. then explain why you ordered them as such.
-Liberty
-Social and Racial Tolerance
-National Pride
-Justice
-Security
-Freedom of the press
-Preemptive Military actions
-the Spread of Democracy
-Capitalism
-Right to Privacy
there is no right or wrong order. depending on how you look at it i suppose.

These are all abstractions so it's really hard for me to rank them vaguely and absolutely. Circumstances could drastically change my order. But I'll try to explain. Liberty is freedom and it's how man should live. Justice is fairness and responsibility and keeps liberty in check. Security is necessary for the preservation of Liberty and Justice. These three also lead to the other seven, which is why things like racial tolerance are ranked much lower (if people are free, justice is assured, and people are safe, they should become more tolerant). Capitalism works well with liberty and justice but it's also an imperfect system that needs to spread to survive - similar to cancer. The rest are second tier values to me.

I agree with Khal( as usual) but I put a higher value on freedom of the press. Without accurate and widely spread information, liberty and justice die. Therefore it has to come directly behind them.

Honestly freedom of the press might supersede TW first two because it fosters Liberty and Justice.

Capitalism screws over the poor people and let the top soak up their own wealth. Justice & equality is a priority (in my opinion) for a society to thrive because it also makes the idea of working together & teamwork easier to comprehend and follow.

Yup I don't disagree with you placing significant importance on Freedom of the Press, as the free spread of information does foster justice and liberty. It's sort of a chicken/egg relationship, because they both sort of require the other and they both sort of create the other. Without justice/liberty, can you have freedom of the press? Very interesting - I think you could rank those three almost interchangeably because they're all vital and all deserving of a 1 spot.

dont dwell on the details. they are just some selected ideals. im finding the answers thus far quite interesting. my list goes....
-Liberty

-social and racial tolerance
-freedom of press
-security
-justice
-national pride
-democracy
-preemptive military action
-capitalism

i barely care bout the last 6 in all honesty. just me. i feel security is pointless without liberty. we are always in danger. Id rather have my freedoms than safety.

Wasn't it Jefferson? I actually don't know myself. People attribute that quote to both of them. That in itself is pretty symbolic of what America was meant to be.
When a drunken eccentric with a love of partying, French women, and gambling, like Franklin can work with a frugal, uptight, idealist like Jefferson to create some of the most groundbreaking ideals in human history.
Such characters the founding fathers were. It's almost like a sitcom.

... Preemptive military action is too connected to capitalism to make it to my list. "Spread of democracy" is a political rhetoric, veiled version of the same.
National pride? One of the most potentially dangerous forces in the world.
Privacy is in process of getting outlawed via Facebook, Google and Homeland Security (cf. capitalism)
