Is this really a game?
Forums › General Discussion › Is this really a game?-
If we all sat down to play Monopoly. We would all lay claim to areas of the board and profit from them. We would improve them by putting houses and hotels to make more money. Nonetheless, the strong will survive and all but one player will be forced to give up their property at some point. Sound familiar??
Now if you play me.. I will sometimes get pissed and flip the board up and playfully call you ugly or insult your mom. But we still leave with respect and friends.
Why in TurfWars do we lose turfs and want to kill somebody? Is this a game or not? I used to get more worked up about it, but now I have more that Monopoly perspective. This is an honest question that I would love to hear your opinions on. -

Damm shake gotta give it to you on this one, u moved up a notch in my book because I'm guilty as hell, losing turf pisses me off to the core, & I'll be the first to tell you that shit probly won't ever change🎱♠
-
Get some... How so? You'd think war would make things more emotional.
-
It should be just a game Shake but I think for some reason people seem to need to get to that point. I remember the first time I was attacked I was pissed. But I quickly turned it into a fun battle while spouting off wise remarks and mobbing up like a SOB. Some people take it very seriously and need to take a step back and let it go. No one likes to lose a turf but I look at them like pieces on a checkerboard at this point. Some will get lost and some will make it safely. At the end of the day if you don't treat this game as a game, your probably not having fun. If thats the case then whats the point??

Not really. Bugsbunny has set a great example by not whining under her 6 vendettas and constant capping. She doesn't let it show. I'm trying to act more like her.Get some... How so? You'd think war would make things more emotional.

I hate it

I used to take it way too seriously too. I hated this one local for a long time early for taking a few turf and attacking me hourly. It motivated me to mob up and defeat him. Then when I took a break it allowed me time to realize it is just a game. You don't have to remain on top to have fun and if someone beats you up, big deal. There is no end game here and it's easy to go and rebuild. Good words shake. Hopefully some will read this and learn from it
-
Good words shake. I'm a little different. I pretty much have never cared much about losses on the turf map but I tend to take the forum wars a bit too seriously. Still struggle with that one but I'm getting there
-
Because we all make the mistake of creating turfs that goes beyond turf wars, like if I made a turf of my first loves house, that means somthing to me, & all I need is for a shake&bake to cap it for wat ever reason, I think it's the personalazation of turf were all guilty of that could let us take it further than it should🎱♠

It's a generational thing....when I was a kid, there were no computers to hide behind, no crazy video games to eat up days, hours, weeks of our time. There's limited social interaction anymore. When we would " hang out" as kids if you acted out you caught a beating...but the next day everyone moved on. It's easy to sit behind ur device and be a smart ass and act like a moron because there's absolutely no recourse. I see this in the workplace every time we interview to hire new staff. The younger generations are smart, tech savvy, educated....but for the most part have a sense of entitlement and simply don't know how to act. Me on the other hand....well mommy simply didn't love me...that's why I'm a big doucher...: )

I think you hit the nail right on the head Jimmy. Very well put you big doucher.

🎯🎯🎯 Shake. Perspective... But what can u expect from ppl. Downright we are all barbaric hence the I'm better or badder than you are. It's fun seeing ppl lose it here in the forums cuz it speaks volumes about them except they never see it whilst the rest of the world laughs at them & they continue to wonder/question why.

It may have something to do with the personal touch of laying claim to an area in your neighborhood. You build the turf, fly your flag and feel that it's yours because you can see it on a map wih your name on it. I think that, plus those of us who spend money on the game are the two main factors. Money is always an issue, no?
-
Good words man

I think there are a lot of good points made...
Jimmie's point of anonminity.
Mickey's point of personal territory.
But there is also the fact that a game of monopoly ENDS. After an hour or more someone wins. As it is, some of us have been playing this game for almost a year - more than the money, that's why I am invested. Also, in a traditional monopoly game you are playing with friends - people you knew before you sat down and rolled the dice. So it's easier to forgive cause you were friends before.

This game is taken more to heart because it is a war game.. Most people hate seein there money wasted when turfs are capped

I agree with AKA in that the turfs I build have had emotional attachment. The feeling of someone taking one and that being beyond your control is a lot to process.
Now I don't mind turf being taken as much...even getting wiped out of a city isn't the end of the world.
I'm still working through the inevitable disappointment in some players.
For the most part, I think I have the right sort of perspective to keep playing the game. -
I used to think that a turf taken was the worst insult that you could receive and showed no respect. However, I just gave away 400 turfs to other mobs in Sydney and Melbourne and It hurt me alot. I even gave away Hamsterdam, the oldest turf in the game (31 sep) However, when I start up again in November, I will not have the same perspective- it's just a load of balls on a screen... But what fun it is too lol

In the early "glow" of first starting to play TW, it was a lot harder to not take it seriously. Mainly cuz I was dealing with balancing growing with income, wasn't capo of jackshit and had 2 stronger players fucking with me. Also, in the first 2-4 months TW felt a lot like a solo game (at least in my region), so you were kinda on your own. I was always envious of NYC back then cuz they had like 3 times the population of the northeast in just 1 city. I didn't build down there tho cuz I didn't wanta "get the gasface" so to speak ( we had similar sized mobs at the time but his was fully armed and he had the income to afford it). After hooking up with Johhny and seeing new folks begin to play and the various battles with out of towners, etc it got a lot more of a social gaming feel.
-
Anyway, end of history - I disagree with the monopoly analogy cuz monopoly is so random (relying on the dice rolls) and TW is a lot more about interaction with other players. If the fight system in TW was more randomized (rather than it being pretty much impossible to win against a larger mob) then I could see the analogy cuz players would take chances and rely on luck more.

well said whitey. (whitey also used to be the most trigger happy of the massholes. it took several months of my intentionally fucking with everyone around you except for you to earn your trust. and maybe cupcake and homie moving in to Boston.)
sometimes all it takes is a common enemy to bring players together.

Is this really a game? Proponents who argue “yes” often point to the “You play it on an iPhone (etc) device.” This simple argument states that since you play this game, especially on some sort of handheld device, then logic dictates that it is just a game.
Still, others argue, “No, it’s more than a game.” Their argument lies to examples were real life was affected by the game such as Big Hank’s suicide after being embarrassed after faking his death or Psi’s downward mental spiral.
Finally, a third group argues that you can never really be sure. They point to such unexplained phenomena such as FlatFlace’s grammar to cast doubt on whether one can truly ever know.
In the good old days, all you had to worry about was if it was real or Memorex. These days with the matrices, inceptions and replicants – it’s gotten very complex.
My opinion, I’ll keep to myself. And no, you can’t hold my totem…

Hmm..I wonder if there's anyone playing this who let's tw affect their day. Like, someone caps 20 turfs from you in 10 minutes and you have an attitude all day at work. Anyone??
-
Nice analogy .... Probably easier to ask if there's anyone out there who has never had their physical wellbeing threatened whilst playing this ... You'd probably get fewer replies. Ooooohh the shame of this world in which we live.... Now pass me the nachos.
