So I'm sure we've all seen the show on discovery channel. Well you see my great grandma and my uncle (the one from the moth man story) own a bar and have owned it for a Long time in my family in a small Pennsylvania town so I thought theyd like this show.
It opened up a whole line of discussion taking me back through years of family history.

And where does this form into a horror story?

So way back before this town was called what it is now (not going to reveal it for privacy reasons) it was a farm. But one of the main roads to the west ran through it and this man thought he'd never be able to farm with this so he turned it all into plots. Their bar was bought on one of these lots.
-
During the time of the whiskey rebellion, when Washington sent about 5,000 troops into Pennsylvania, they camped out across from the bar. The man who owned all the lots knew that as long as they would be camped there it won't sell so he converted it into lots (as in parking lots, but they didnt have cars so...I don't know I was too tired to ask questions).
-
Fast forward to prohibition. My great great great grandma owned the bar at this time. She would illegally brew moonshine and she also brewed alcohol in none other than, that's right, her bathtub. She ran the bar as a speak easy where she would sell it in a back room. And down through the family the moonshine trade was passed.
-
My great uncle was a great moonshiner. He had a still in his barn where he would brew moonshine, 200 proof. Sadly though one day the still blew up and took the whole barn down with it. That was the end for his brewing. However, now both my uncle and my grandma learned from him how to brew it and make stills. They currently are the only two left in the family who know how to brew his 200 proof, but seeing how they run a bar that's doing good and my great grandma is of course too old to be brewing moonshine, the tradition has died.
-
And once my great grandma was visiting her other aunt and uncle (not the one who moonshined) because they loved her so much they wanted to adopt her. The uncle was an alcoholic though and they would constantly fight which is why my great grandma wouldn't let them adopt her. Well my uncle had a big vineyard (this is in another state but she didnt say where) and he would take the grapes from the vineyard and brew it into wine and store the wine in his barn. He had barrels upon barrels of wine in there.
-
Well one day the two got in a fight while he was drunk. Her aunt had been fed up with this constant fighting and left the house for a couple hours. Later she came home and my uncle gave a big ol glass to my great grandma and said "hey go down to the barn and get me some wine" so she went down. She opens the door to the barn, steps in, and the ground is strangely sticky.
Her aunt went down and opened all the spickets and let all the wine pour onto the floor
Imagine her uncles face when she comes up and says they're a no wine left its all on the floor 😂😂
He beat her aunt with his slipper.
-
And then my uncle told some unrelated story about growin pot in his basement in the 70's but that's a story for another time (unless you want to hear it).
That's all I have for now folks. I'm hoping you all found this story very interesting and have a very merry Christmas!

Still a great story, didn't end with me wetting my pants with my manjina tho.

You sure it was 200 proof? The best shiners in the business are hoping for 120-140 when they make theirs.

Further south of (undisclosed location from above) yes 200 proof is very achievable. 😉 Shhhh

It is the maximum possible, though. Not a lot of hillbillies that are smart enough to pull it off. I should know, I come from a long line of drunk rednecks.Further south of (undisclosed location from above) yes 200 proof is very achievable. 😉 Shhhh

Professional distilleries can't pull it off. Everclear runs 190-195. I call BS.

If he's my great grandma's son and I already have an uncle a generation down so would that make him my great uncle or grand uncle or what?

Whelp.

You can't get 200 proof from distillation. It is possible to get pure alcohol, but not out of a still. As far as the show; Popcorn Sutton lived about 20 miles from me, until he committed suicide so the law couldn't get him. He was a true legend.

Pure alcohol is possible but ceases to be pure once exposed to air. It's hydrophilic and sucks the water right out of the air.
