If a person is born deaf...
Forums › General Discussion › If a person is born deaf...-
I came across this question somewhere, I don't rember exactly where, probably in the depths of the Internet. I found it interesting to think about, so here it is for the great thinkers of Turf Wars to ponder. If a person is born deaf, what language, if any, do they think in?

Wow

They will probably learn to read and recognize words and meaning in whatever language they are taught. But they will not be able to pronunciate well probably??,,?.,?!?..?

What about the voice in your head when you read something? Since they're born deaf they won't know of that either.

You are thinking wih your understanding of language, that others all have the same experience. There is more to the story than that.
I have many deaf friends and I am fluent in American Sign Language (ASL).
To answer your question, which isn't a bad question, those born deaf are taught to read and are taught the associated sign for each word. Like a person who is taught the Spanish word for an object, that is a completely different word for the same thing in English.
When they grow up, they communicate in sign language. All talking with friends is in sign language. When they dream, as they have told me many times, they see people signing in the dream as well.
It makes sense really. I don't dream in Spanish. All my dreams are in the language I use everyday. ASL is a language in itself and that is how they dream.
Thinking a word is the recalling of how it was taught. Non-verbal communication is still communication.

The mind has it's own language. We translate our mind's language into whatever language we learn: English, Spanish, French, etc.

They won't think in a language ? When you throw a stick for a dog to fetch does the dog think woof wuff wooof. Translated I'm going to get that fucking stick again ?

But what does get me is what does a blind person who's always been blind dream of

Well, dreams usually reflect what happened in the previous day, so they would probably see nothing, just the emotions and sounds they felt and heard. But what does get me is what does a blind person who's always been blind dream of

But what If they don't learn sign language? (Blind + deaf) what would they think in(or how would it seem to them that they think) and dream about? You are thinking wih your understanding of language, that others all have the same experience. There is more to the story than that.

✂.I've also read a theary that your mother toung can actually constrain your mind by controlling how you think, would these people be affected by this?

I'd agree with this, my son was born deaf, and I suppose it could be said he is now 'tri-lingual' bsl, signed English and spoken English. What he uses depends on who he is talking to.You are thinking wih your understanding of language, that others all have the same experience. There is more to the story than that.

They can still be taught. Often they still sign or motion on their own.⌖🔥Groucho🔥⌖ wrote:

On grouchos topic of dreams, I wonder what people who are born blind dream about... If anyone knows someone who was born blind, can u ask them for me?
-
In reference to a person's ability to learn if they were born Blind + Deaf, reference this story: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helen_Keller
I have also personally taught two pilots to fly that were both deaf and they passed their private pilot checkride on the first try.
This is a good discussion because it expands the minds of many from 'seeing' the world through one perspective only. The human mind and body is amazingly adaptable and the human will can overcome limitations that many of us could barely imagine. The key is to never count anybody 'out' just because they are different than us or what we consider to be essential or 'required equipment'. ;)

I've often wondered how blind people imagine things. They can 'see' small things by feeling their shape and form with their hands, but what about huge things like buses, or bridges, or buildings? How can they comprehend those?
