Could someone help a beginner out? I want to learn to play better. I Have some basic knowledge of the guitar. I know a fair amount of chords. Any advice would be appreciated.

Start with smoke on the water.

Actually learn which notes are where on the guitar and you'll be able to learn anything. I myself play a little bit of bass and sadly I have no clue what notes I'm playing, so don't be like me!

Learn the power chord first. You can play almost any melody or rhythm guitar with just power chords. Your index finger goes on the actual note, your middle finger goes on the fifth (next string down and two notes up) and your third finger goes on the octave (next string down from your middle finger and immediately next to it - this is the same note as your index finger but one octave higher.) best advice I ever got was STAY WITH IT! It takes a long time but once you know the guitar you know it, it's like rising a bike.
It's also easier on your fingers to learn on a full electric than on an acoustic, strings are much thinner.

The three things my guitar teacher always told me to do we're
1learing instrument (notes and locations relative to each other)
2chords, not just power chords but practice alot of shapes up and down the neck
3scales, not just the pentatonic but all kinds in all keys
Hope this helps! -

Thats how I learned to play. Just play along songs you like. I played along with metallica songs.
Never had a lesson though, wasnt interested in reading notes and theory. Regret that a bit now. -
Guitarjamz.com, great site to learn how to play. The guy who teaches you also can show you how to play songs on his YouTube channel. If you wanna know more, just send me a private comment.
Anyways, if you wanna play guitar, there's one big rule to it: There is no natural talent.
Now you know that, start with the notes. I'm gonna suspect you're using a regular 6-string guitar, and the notes from thickest to thinnest are E A D G B E, where the thickest and most bass you can get on a guitar is the low E and the thinnest with high pitch is the high E. Another way to remember is this: Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddie.

It's a good teaching tool. I bought it last year to play with and it teachs some of the same techniques that I used to learn how to play the guitar.ཀ〇ทㄎ丁ㄠཞ wrote:

Avoid listening to Tommy Emmanuel, you will smash your new guitar and vow never to play again.

I've been playing for 30 years. Keep practicing, even when it's hard to do and it doesn't sound the way you expect it to. One day, the motions will make sense, and you will make huge strides very quickly. Also, don't under-buy. If you buy too cheap a guitar, it won't ever stay in tune, and you'll get frustrated and lose motivation and likely quit. You don't have buy a Gibson, but don't buy a $199 starter kit from Guitar Center, either.

Train your ears! Guitar books and teachers can teach you chords and songs but you ears are your best friend. Learn tones and find them on the guitar. And practice at least an hour a day on scales. Learn all of them.

Wonderwall

I believe ultimate-guitar.com or something like that is a good website to learn to play specific songs. Keep in mind though, its user input, so some may be wrong.
