Has anyone else had to deal with FEMA? I lost everything in Hurricane Sandy and they never answer the phone. What happened to "no red tape"? Where is the aid? It's been over a week and no call back. FEMA inspectors came to my building and couldn't inspect my apt because "I wasn't on their list", sounds like red tape to me.... Where is the power, The food, The heat, the basic needs they promised us they would help with? Yet another time I'm getting shafted by the federal government. Thanx for nothing.

If anyone works for a news agency send me a pm. We have been forgotten and need to get the message out.
-
That's terrible to hear. I'm sorry to learn of your situation. I can't offer any advice but I do hope you get aid soon. 😳

If i were you i would keep calling. If you have kids you're probably not safe there. Also if you down load the red cross app,it will tell you where there are shelters that have basic needs. The important thing is that you are alive.I would never like to depend on the government for help, that's why i stay a little prepaired. Depending of how bad it is where you live ,high populated areas may have air borne diseases.

Don't rely on the government for anything. Politicians talk and make promises which all expand government and when the government is call on the survive they provide is half assed. Local community organizations, churches, shelters provide better and many more services than the government can. Sorry for your loss.

When my house was hit by a tornado, FEMA didn't help because our damage area was to small!

FEMA was never designed to be a "first-responder". It kicks in AFTER your own insurance has been tapped. Expect 4 or 5 weeks before you hear anything at all.
Give it another week and I'll bet that Romeny's soup cans will start to look pretty good to you and you'll understand why all the private sector aid starts with practical stuff like food and water.
A can of soup is easily dismissed UNTIL you are hungry and there isn't anything else to be had.
For those of you that are donating, support anyone that is DELIVERING food, water, clothing and shelter. You have to start there.

You can't rely on someone to provide something. Even if they make promises.

Nicely stated, during this time anything at all is helpful and certainly needed. It'll take time, things aren't going to be fixed over night.FEMA was never designed to be a "first-responder". It kicks in AFTER your own insurance has been tapped. Expect 4 or 5 weeks before you hear anything at all.

My question again- can anyone please point to a significant moment of assistance from the likes of Amercan Express, JP Morgan, Citibank... Etc.? Otherwise known as 'the private sector'.

Agreed on FEMA not being a first responder. But the response has been facilitated much faster and better and in an much much more densely populated area than say New Orleans where it took five days for them to even begin to help those poor people. Sandy doesn't even compare when it comes to lack of help from a mismanaged FEMA under Bush.
Nonetheless, it's secondary to how your suppose to help yourself with insurance etc. and, to expect everything to be fixed in a week? Ya right, try years. At least you are still managing to charge your phone? Lucky.

FEMA. Right. After Ike (well after) they were good about food boxes and those lovely blue tarps (that are still on some roofs around here four years later). But it was the work of volunteer groups and deliveries of donated goods that made the biggest difference in our community. We had prepped and were ok, but many below the dam were flooded and lost their homes and many had trees through their houses and volunteer groups went around and helped with that. Not FEMA. But in the south (Texas at least) these groups exist to do that--help clean up and even do makeshift rebuilding to hold you until repairs can be made.

Save the 'G' Movement!
What form of help can you offer? Skip buying one round of Don Points and contribute? -
I lost everything in one of the 4 hurricanes that hit FL in 2004 leaving my 4 daughters and myself with absolutely nothing. FEMA condemned my house and offered us a shelter where we had a safe place to sleep with clean water and food. Luckily I also had family that was able to help

Drops fill the ocean.Words of wisdom!! Every little bit counts... To all those telling me I shouldn't rely on someone else, try losing everything u own in one shot before u talk. I just moved in last month. Bought brand new furniture. Everything is gone. This is not about rainy day money. This is everything i had to my name. I just want a place to live, some power, n a hot shower now. This is about drawing attention to an area that is being overlooked. Parts of Far Rockaway, Rockaway Beach and Long Beach are destroyed, it's like a third world country out here. I can't tell you about anywhere else but I will tell you what I see. People are suffering here and because manhattan has power no one cares.... Make it known that we need help.

Hell, in the 17th century- the government didn't give you food stamps or assistance of any sort. They handed you a axe and told you to build a house. So far have we removed ourselves from our own freedoms to complain...You can't rely on someone to provide something. Even if they make promises.
