Voter ID. What's the big deal?
Forums › General Discussion › Voter ID. What's the big deal?-
What's the big deal with this whole voter ID law? From what I was told by my social studies teacher getting an ID is free and it will stop people from voting multiple times. So why is everyone upset over this?
-
Because in some places it isn't free, and some people are being refused registration altogether. And honestly, it doesn't prevent voter fraud in the slightest.
-
fraud does happen just not on a wide scale. always hear about how dead people vote or that bugs bunny registered to vote. we already get voter registration cards, whats the big deal if you show id to prove who you are? i personally know someone who tried to vote for a dead relative but family stopped him. as long as id is free to all then its fine with me.
-
There was a news report I saw on YouTube about voter fraud in the place where they count the votes. All these congress people jumping all over the place hitting buttons on other people's counters. Terrible terrible thing. Welcome to the democracy (or, rather, republic.)

how does it disefranchise thousands? free ids to all and they have to wait until next election to get the word out. most people already have id anyway. kinda hard to get thru life without one anymore. heck most common way to register is thru motor voter. You want to disenfranchise thousands of voters to combat dozens of fraud cases. What the hell is wrong with your math skills?
-
you need id to: get a job, cash a check, get a credit card, buy beer, get a checking account, buy cigarettes, drive, why not vote. if you forget you get a provisional ballot. if you dont have an id this law gets you access to a free state issued id you can use for all those things. if you cant afford one now doesnt this help you with a lot of things?

Like i sed, its the limitd hours and plases in swing states that bothr me. Like ohio. De ja vu peepl. Its happnd bfor.

if its not free thats not right. i dont believe that will survive a court fight. and limited poll hours and refusing voter registration arent anything new but are different issues to be dealt with. but it would prevent fraud. kinda hard for me to vote for my dead grandfather or in a different district without id to back it up.ϻ͞ċȵя͟ɗƖҽ wrote:

close hardfought elections are commonplace. if every vote counts then they should be real votes. i dont think fraud is widespread but it does happen. thus the phrase vote early vote often. hard to argue your point about politicians. politics is full of dirtbags.Voter fraud in America is a myth trooped out by politicians who know their best chance to win at the ballot box is to limit access thereto for folks who likely would vote for their opponents.
-
I wonder who owns shares in a company which designs the voter software, and produces the voting machines for several states to use in the upcoming election... Meh it's prolly not important.

when gambling was passed here part of it said the machines had to be bought from an in state company. many of these middleman companies ended up being owned by family members of politicians. wouldnt surprise me if it were something similar.I wonder who owns shares in a company which designs the voter software, and produces the voting machines for several states to use in the upcoming election... Wrong! That doesn't make any sense! In Wisconsin during the recall for Scott Walker, the unions were bringing people up from Illinois into the polls to recall Walker! And they couldn't stop them because they didn't have their ID's! But somehow Walker won. But anyway the point of these laws is fighting against voter fraud! If you have a problem with this law, you're fighting FOR liars and cheaters! That's why, not because republicans are rich...Because republicans are rich.

Voter fraud is a fact of life, it will happen and it will happen (or at least be attempted) at every step. Why not take steps to prevent or at least discourage it?
If someone is over 18 and doesn't have a drivers license or state issued ID if some sort something is wrong. In some states an ID does cost a few bucks; in that case allow a current utility bill with a name and address that matches that of the voter registration. That doesn't solve every problem but does prevent the dead from voting.
The problem is a little fraud can be a huge problem if it happens in just a few key districts. A few votes one way or another really could swing an electoral vote in highly competitive places. Anyone who thinks that isn't an issue needs to get their head checked.

I don't understand why people think it will suppress voters... It isn't that difficult or costly to get an ID and most people already have them. There are other forms of ID too so if they failed their driving tests, they can still vote.
-
I don't get it eithor. You need ID for so many things now. Why would verifying your identity be an issue. So what if an ID costs money... So do shoes, phones, cars,.... Your bank verifies who you. Verifying your identity to vote should be looked at as a good thing not a bad one.

The implications of Voter Faud coming from 'DIEBOLD' the maker of most U.S. electronic voting machines- is already well established going back to the George Bush era.
From Wikipedia there is this:
In August 2003, Walden O'Dell, then the chief executive of Diebold, announced that he had been a top fund-raiser for President George W. Bush and had sent a get-out-the-funds letter to 100 wealthy and politically inclined friends in the Republican Party, to be held at his home in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio.[10]
In December 2005, O'Dell resigned following reports that the company was facing securities fraud litigation surrounding charges of insider trading.[11]
In March 2007, it was reported by the Associated Press that Diebold was considering divesting itself of its voting machine subsidiary because it was "widely seen as tarnishing the company's reputation".[7]
-
Continued-
In August 2007, Wikipedia Scanner found that edits via the company's IP addresses occurred to Diebold's Wikipedia article, removing criticisms of the company's products, references to its CEO's fund-raising for President Bush and other negative criticism from the Wikipedia page about the company in November 2005. -
That is why I personally favor the old fashioned 'gear and lever' style voting machines.
Cannot be manipulated.
-
Also if people on welfare who are dirt poor can afford an Xbox/illegal drugs, they can afford an ID. Which again is cheap or free in most states

Omg I was being sarcastic. God forbid if anyone ever fact check any of the things I say... It's Romney! Romney owns shares in one of these companies. The swing state Ohio that is!I wonder who owns shares in a company which designs the voter software, and produces the voting machines for several states to use in the upcoming election... Anyways I'm gonna go zone out.

Frankly, if someone can't figure out how to get an ID in this day and age, I don't want them choosing our leaders that effect out lives.
