Damn police...

I don't know if it's just here in Alabama, but the police seem to be nothing more than glorified tax collectors for the state. I just bought myself a 2000 Ram 1500 today and a cop stops me for having no tag. Ok, I show her the title and bill of sale and seeing as I just bought it, i had no insurance for it. She says hold on a minute, runs my information and comes back with a ticket for no insurance. She tells me that she wasn't going to give me a ticket for the expired or switched tag, but that she was giving me a ticket for no insurance. I tried explaining to her that I had just bought the truck but she wasn't going to have any of it. Needless to say ill be contesting the damn thing. Ugh. Anyone else have views, contradicting or otherwise?

Take your insurance card where you pay for the ticket and they will dismiss it.
-
Whenever I buy a car, the dealer won't give me the keys until I show proof of insurance on that car. Sounds like if you bought it from a dealer, he screwed you.
-
Things must be different over here in the UK, as driving any vehicle under any circumstance without insurance would not only get you a fixed penalty, but in most cases, the vehicle would also be seized.
If insurance is a legal requirement to drive on public highways, why wouldn't you sort it before driving?

OTB: Hell, I didn't ask... On the ticket it shows her name as A.A. Tate... Maybe that's her! She was a hot cop indeed!
Aubergine: No, this was a private seller. When I bought my first car it was from a dealer and they never asked that. Must be a regional thing
Knight: I just bought it and had no chance to buy the insurance. I hadn't thought of buying it in anticipation

I understand what you're saying but since when did an impulse purchase give anyone a right to break the law? Lol
I'm pretty sure the seller would have been happy enough to allow you to arrange insurance before driving it off.

Pretty lenient structure in comparison to us then. I suppose it seems fair to say that cop must have been having a slow day that day then. Bitch.⚜Ꮶ͜иιɢн͡т⚜ wrote:

I couldnt even drive away with My new car without proof of insurance. In this case the officer was probably correct. But you are also correct in the fact that police officers nowadays have indeed become nothing much more then a source of revenue for numerous corrupt and out-of-control governments nationwide.no pun intended towards any LEOs.
-
The officer is correct and your an idiot. It is a law that you need insurance in any vehicle on the road, plain and simple. To make a purchase and transfer the title you need insurance so you clearly don't have a title either
-
I just bought a truck this spring and I transferred without insurance.

Gunhog: That's what I was wondering also. However, of the state gives you 20 days for everything, is it still legal to drive without insurance? An interesting question that I may have to ask an attorney
Sinister: Of course I don't have the title in my name yet. I just bought the thing a couple hours ago and the DMV offices are already closed. So that aspect was out of my control.
-
Always good to know your local ordinances. Ah, federalism! P.S. in MD you do have to have insurance before driving off the lot.
-
Just go to court and show them the insurance card (that you better have bought by then) and you should be fine...
But stop blaming the cop/get mad at the LEO for doing their job. You were driving an uninsured vehicle. Regardless of the owner the vehicle itself was uninsured. It's a simple law. Easy ticket to write. Now go buy some coverage and brush your teeth before court and you should be fine. 👍
-
I have state farm all I need to do is call them 24/7 and they will issue me insurance on the spot for 5 days. As long as I have a insurance card for one of my vehicles the policy number is the same. They will also issue you a temp insurance card over the web till you see a agent during business hours.
-
Say you are not allowed to talk to strangers, then drive off
-
What's the ticket there for no insurance? Here in Ontario, Canada the max fine is $5000.00 but usually gets dropped to about $1500 if you fight it in court.
-
In Georgia you have to have insurance on a car regardless before it goes on the road. 30 days to get a tag.
-
You should have known before if you could drive the car with out the tags. Cop did his job correctly..you stuck out like a sore thumb. NYS you need to have insurance in order to drive it off the lot

You don't need an attorney, just go to the court clerk, show them proof of insurance on you as a driver, ticket dismissed. No biggie. Seriously not worth losing sleep over. It's far better that municipalities collect $200 from uninsured motorists because those guys cost you as a taxpayer and as an insured motorist way more than you realize. Just check out the uninsured motorist portion of your insurance if you carry full coverage. You'd rather a cop write a ticket for all without proof of insurance and let the court clerk sort out the deadbeats. Yeah that's right I called some of y'all deadbeats.
-
Every state I've ever lived in will allow an insurance card for another car to be used if you still have temp tags. You still need insurance and proof of it, but it doesn't need to be for the vehicle you're driving.
I don't know the laws where you live but it does sound like you screwed up by not having the little piece of paper. Trivial crap, but that's the way it is.
If you have a current card just take it to the court house and it should be no problem.
