IMac help
Forums › General Discussion › IMac help-
I just received an email from apple saying that my iMac has a defect in the hard drive that will ruin my computer. They are replacing the hard drive for free but I need the original OS installation discs. I bought this computer used from my father's office's tech guy who has since been fired. I'm not really sure what to do from here and I'm not exactly tech savvy. Any suggestions?

Personally, I'd contact apple to see if it's legit, sounds more than a little fishy! 😉

I planned on calling support first thing in the morning, I just thought I'd ask around on here because it's my closest resource to computer smart people at the moment.Personally, I'd contact apple to see if it's legit, sounds more than a little fishy! 😉

Actually, having just done a little googling, it could be the real deal.
Tap a brief description of your problem in google and have a dig about. I'd still contact support though.

Call apple or go to one of their stores.
It might be a scam. -

Make sure you contact support through apples website and not a link you have been given, just to be in the safe side.

If they are changing the HD it shouldn't matter what Op system it is currently running. Seems like they would prefer u to have the latest and greatest! Definitely call.

Read a news article yesterday about this. Yes. It it legit.

"Apple is contacting affected iMac owners who provided a valid email address during the product registration process to let them know about this program. "
How did you get the email?

Sounds wrong wrong wrong. On apples website is a section for recall programmes I would check here. If its on there follow the instructions on the site.

Alright here's where I am with this, I did some research and made a call and it is a legit problem and I need the original OS discs to reinstall the original operating system (snow leopard) back onto the computer when I get the new hard drive(at least that's what I understand, the lady was talking a mile a minute in a squeaky high pitched voice). They're trying to sell it to me for $20.

You'll need the install disc eventually to run disc utility on your hard drive. You can't repair your hard drive from your hard drive. Buy the disc.

Still don't believe this is legit.

TAKE IT TO AN APPLE STORE!!!
THE GENIUS GUYS TOLD ME THAT THEY NEVER CONTACT YOU DIRECTLY IF THERE IS A PROBLEM WOTH YOUR SPECIFIC DEVICE.
(Just general, mass effect issues) -

The closest apple store is two hours away. Do you think I could call first instead of driving there to find out I need to come back with the disc? Or would they have the disc for sale there?TAKE IT TO AN APPLE STORE!!!

Apple wouldn't ask to sell you the disk or contact re a faulty item. This is a con.the Anarchist wrote:

If it isn't broken don't fix it .

Seriously kids, quit giving this guy bad advice. This issue IS legitimate, and apple ARE contacting people via registered device email.
If you have nothing constructive to give in terms of advice, why bother posting? Stupid bloody time wasters.
Sorry about that Nicky. As you have already established, this is a real issue which apple are addressing. They've had issues with some seagate HDs installed on certain models of iMac.
If you're not entirely sure of the info given by the lady you spoke to, I'd try to contact them again. If they talk too quickly and confuse you, ask them to slow down and/or repeat themselves. After all, they are customer support, they are there to serve you. 😉👍
