Columbus Day shouldn't be celebrated...
Forums › General Discussion › Columbus Day shouldn't be celebrated...-
Because Columbus didn't actually discover it. He wasn't even the first European to go there, the Vikings reached North America many, many years earlier. There were also hundreds of thousands of Native Americans already living there when he arrived.
-
So our history would be greatly different without him.
-
All true. But the Vikings weren't telling anyone about their discoveries and the native Americans had no desire of travelling to Europe.
Whilst the slavery, colonialism and other negatives happened because of Columbus he did set the world on a new path. The Steve jobs of his day.
-
And he was a total asshole that raped and slaughtered thousands upon thousand of natives with the excuse that they failed to heed a warning they couldn't possibly understand. And further, without him there would still have been settlement as people came here before he did. He effectively created (percentage wise) a holocaust to the native people. Do the research like I did, he's not the glittered adventurer he's made out to be.
-
And somebody used cement shoes against me, probably for posting this.

Columbus wasn't the first to discover it, but he did make it known to the rest of the world that it existed

Who was the first person to discover Europe?

I'm honestly more concerned with what's on the other side of OTB's pants.
As for Columbus Day yes, it should be separated. Despite the fact he unleashed mayhem on the native Americans it wasn't all his doing and all Europeans with power and ambition on investing in the Americas contributed. Yes he wasnt the first European to discover America however he was the first to open contact to the Americas. Without him a lot of technologies we have today wouldn't exist and the history of the world would be radically different. So in some ways we should celebrate Columbus Day for a couple reasons
1) Revolutionairy Explorer that changed the course of history.
2) His mission to finding a trade route to India is the reason most of us exist today.
As for him being a total asshole. How do I answer this. Most of Europe was warlike history can easily illustrate this. To discredit Columbus for war like behavior would be like discrediting Alexsander the Great for conquering the Mediterranean and most of the middle east. -
wow what a controversial opinion
-
eric. you are so brave

Think of it this way...had he not reported his discovery, the United States would have never existed, and Hitler and the Axis Power most likely would have won WW2
Point is, without him, the world would be drastically different today!

You gotta think back farther before WW2. We would be seeing a first World War in the 1500s, as the English, French, Portugese, and Spanish would have all focused on colonizing Africa and Asia instead of the Americas. Germany, Italy and others weren't even coountries at the time.Think of it this way...had he not reported his discovery, the United States would have never existed, and Hitler and the Axis Power most likely would have won WW2

Yes, Colombus was a dick, but hechanged the course of history. Plus, he was sent to prison after he returned, and died never knowing that he had not been to India. I personally think that his attitude towards thenew world, with his plundering and murdering, is more important than the discovery of the continent, which someone else wouldve eventually done. -
What many people don't undertand is that his actions toward the natives caused all Europeans to believe they were gods among mortals. Other explorers just imitated his attitide toward the discovery.

Wow! This is all sh*t with all these stupid holidays that we've created. There are sooooo many people in history who did things equal or greater than Colombus and only get breaded over in our history books. I look at it as God just waiting for the right time for the rest of the world to know that they aren't the only ones on this planet we call earth.

I guess Columbus can be credited (indirectly), to discovering Boston. 👍 -
Ed Sullivan put The Beatles on American television. Is there an Ed Sullivan day? No, there is not.
Hope this helps. -

Also on that note the hundreds of innocent and really pissed off natives that were enslaved and killed because of him and his diseases.
