Ok this has been irking me. Retard is a real word. As a verb it means to impede or slow down, to delay. To say something is retarded has nothing to do with people who have mental or physical disabilities. Now if you were to use the word to describe someone who is disable, that I can see people taking offense to.

I could be wrong...but I didn't think that that term was used for the medical diagnosis anymore. Hence the problem with using it. It has strongly negative connotations. Not that I don't disagree with you about the direction your taking...however, you would appear to be not the norm. Most everyone else views the term in a negative way.

I don't see race words as harmful.. Retard on the other hand I do.. If someones slow they may not fully understand and just take it as a bad word toward themself.. Either way I'm with the NJ gov for this.
