Has anyone here ever filed for a patent?
-
Tell me your idea, and I'll tell you if you should.

I did....I owned a paintball team and we designed a paintball gun stand. Had to patent the idea. We did both the poor mans patent and filed one with our local government....

✋👋✋👋 it can get expensive. Do as much research on your own in regards to the uniqueness of the idea/concept and what else is out there that may be inclusive of your idea. The minute a lawyer starts doing the research for you the $ racks up quickly.

Yep, ask away.

My bro just filed one. I live with him. What you want I ask him?
-
Patented the butt-seer.

It seems like every paragraph I read will cost another $3k. It's gotta be a cheaper way to do it.

My dad has several. He also invented a couple of things (ie a new method to cut glass with lasers) but hadn't patented them because the name of the company that he worked for at the time would have recieved the majority of the credit, so it wasn't worth it.

I have a patent. Start with the Claims and work backwards, everything else is fluff. Feel free to PM me.

You can file a patent but it is an expensive endeavor. You can save some hassle to search google patent search, but the attorney will charge between 300-750 to do the search. Unfortunately patents these days are difficult to enforce. If its a good idea a larger company can use your idea and can crush you financially via constant litigation. I'm not going to even mention global issues with patent enforcement.
I've filed several patents, the average cost has come out to around $10k per. Every inquiry from the patent office is going to cost you in attorney fees.
If the idea is sound, go for the patent pending status but get your product to market. Not sure if the patent backlog has cleared out, but it may take 18 to 24 months to get the patent, not to mention the constant back and forth with the patent agent. If it has widespread usage, you could license the product to a larger company.
Ideas are a dime a dozen these days, the ones that make it big are the ones that take the chance.

I designed a tool that the company I worked for patented. I received some of the royalties from it, but nothing really eye popping.
