See if you can find a vintage Ludwig or Gretch kit. For a more modern sound can't go wrong with a DW. Yamaha studio series are also excellent.

I know next to nothing about drums, but I do know zildjian has some good cymbals

This too, go with the pearl export set and some high quality zildjian cymbals and you're set 👍
