Now a follow up. Say you joined a lodge and later on, you wanted to leave it or it wasn't what you were thinking, or like became an atheist while being a mason, would you be allowed to leave? Or Is it like youre in you can't get out?

Very good question, Clone. It is simple enough to just demit. That is our term assigned to leaving the lodge of ones own free will and accord.

I heard that in the olden days of the Freemasons they would give the leaders a black marble and a white marble, and they each put one in a bag. If you got 1 black marble, you was rejected from the freemasons

Fussy, You are correct to an extent. When all masons in good standing in a lodge vote on a petition to allow a person to accept the degrees of masonry, white balls elect and a black ball/cube reject. If the vote is not unanimous, the application is denied. Each jurisdiction has rules on repetitioning.

Exactly my thoughts, up there it said something about a Templar charity can you tell me about that?Ya know, this was a pretty awesome thread. My favorite in a long while. It not only opened my eyes to something I had only heard rumors of, but it also inspired me. Not that I'm going to be a Free Mason (right now) but it makes me want to be a better person and befriend the Free Masons. If I don't join, thats okay. But I feel the need to find out more about them. In a world thats slowly running out of good people, this is the thing that makes me feel like there is hope for society. So thank you

Razor, The website of Knights Templar (http://www.knightstemplar.org/purpose.html) can explain the two foundations better than I can. Here you will find discussion of the two foundations /charities the Knights support. I hope you enjoy the read.

Someone asked me about where the term "Freemason" comes from. I will share the story that I was told and to the best of my research, it's pretty close.
-
Many, many years ago the word "Freemason" came from the term "mason" which means "a builder." These builders were allowed to travel from area to area or region to region "freely" to do their work without having to provide paperwork as they crossed borders. Given the time frame, having a résumé on hand with references on them simply did not exist. To get around this, the builder would acquire skill and as their skill developed, they would be given a password and taught a special grip, like a handshake, as their skill progressed. When the builder would arrive on a jobsite, he would seek out the master builder, master mason, and give him the proper password and grip to indicate his level of expertise and it would also let the master mason know how high his wages should be based on his level of skill. Each degree has a different password and grip just as it does today. While Freemasons were originally stone masons or builders, we are now known builders of men.

I've been interested in joining the masons for years. I've just never got around to it. Makes me think I should go to the Masonic temple here and talk to someone.

Just noticed this thread. I am related to and am friends with several Masons, all outstanding people (but also slightly 'shady' - read, secretive).
Now my question. The point of having to believe in a higher power ( not atheist). Does this mean you need to be practicing in a religion ( attending church regularly, church events, yada yada)? Or can you be a NON practicing ( not a member of a church, not a attending), but still have a basic belief in 'something' higher?
-
You also learn a sacred bond between man and goat. 😱

I'm pals with some Shriners. Good people. Masons do good charity work for us, with some strings attached.

If you believe in a higher power, it is within you, it is not where you go to nor the manner in which you practice that belief.

We refer to God within the Masonic community as Supreme Architect. This allows for all religions without singling out any one religion as one over the other and the word "architect" is synonymous with a builder or creator.
There is no master plan to take over the world despite the rumors.

And despite whatever rumours you hear, there is NO ultra secret, powerful masonic alliance within TW that guides the course of the game, manages the largest players and is gradually taking over the map. It would be so secret that only proven masons would know about it and none of them would ever even hint at it in word or deed. No truth to it. at. all.

Just wanted to say, GOOD JOB clearing things up and informing people with correct information 😉

In our main street in my hometown I noticed that on a small building dark brick quiet almost unnoticeable there was a Freemason sign in the inside of the building I walked in and in the side room there was a small door framed into the wall it looked just like a wall but on one side was a line down the top I opened it and inside was a big red velvet chair with several surrounding that and the wood was not from the so state weird... Right? On the chair was a freemason symbol so I bolted out the building and haven't ever gone back.
