GERMAN SHEPHERDS...?
Forums › General Discussion › GERMAN SHEPHERDS...?-
So, i have ptsd and i've been wanting a German Shepherd for a very long time.
I am looking for medium to low drive, large size shepherds AKC preferrably.
Anyone know of any quality locations to find one?

You should find some dog shows in your area. Also look for the local GSD Club. You need to find a good breeder as GSDs can have major hip problems from poor breeding. They are great dogs but you want to get from a reputable breeder NOT a backyard or dog mill breeder.
Drizz....hmm....is this my ol' nemesis??😘 -
Yo bro I have a german shepherd and I have had some before and they are great dogs to have they will cost around 10kto buy train and maintain but it is worth it always buy from a reputable breader.

I have a german sheperd and we love him. But if you buy from a breeder buy one from someone who breeds them specially for family's. When we went to buy ours we checked a show breeder and the pups were to scared to approach us an those are the dogs that snap and go crazy

I got my Shepard from gypsy glen kennel in Illinois he was 120lbs full bred

You don't need to find someone that's breeds them specially at all. Full bred half bred all nonsense to me. I'm the owner of four Adult German shepherds. None of them were specially bred, all healthy. It really does not matter where the pup comes from as long as you love it and take care of it.

Well actually it does matter. If dogs have nerve issues(anxiety), they are far more likely to bite out of defense or for just being scared. I have a 3 1/2 yr old little girl and I need a companion i can take anywhere with me who is level headed. You don't need to find someone that's breeds them specially at all. Unless you have an alpha personality and are willing to take on someone else's "mistakes and problems" I do NOT suggest a rescue dog. I know many people who have spent thousands on dollars retraining and "fixing" rescues. Me included.
I know that is horrible to say, because rescue dogs are the ones really in need of a forever home. But you need to know what you are doing and have the time.
Best bet is attend a dog show... Talk to GSD breeders. Check out the AKC website. Between the two of those you will find a good breeder and maybe even a rescue puppy that hasn't been "scarred".
Good luck! I had a GSD growing up and he was a great dog!! 😄👍 -

We will have to agree to disagree. But all I'm saying is, it's not about where the dog comes from, it's how you raise and treat it. That's what counts. Special bred dogs can also have anxiety.

I found a GSD pup 2 yrs ago. At about 2 months I noticed she was very skittish around EVERYTHING.
I let her go to a GSD rescue after doing a lot of research, and found out dogs can get anxiety and or seperation issues. I LOOOVE animals and I treated her excellent from a pup, but she had that issue.
In my op i stated i have PTSD so with a dog constantly nervous I couldnt have her with me everywhere.
I didnt say ONLY GSD's. I just said that I want to make sure ai get the most mild tempered GSD I can find.
Some actual research effort and you can further see what im talking about. Your own personal success story is great, but I asked for advice on reputable breeders or locations for a very specific reason. Thank you though

I'm really glad things are going better for you Drizz!!
Oh, try to meet the parents of the puppies if you go to a breeder. Temperament is passed on and the parents can give a good indication. -

Check with GSD Rescue, they have so many dogs in foster homes and the foster people would be able to tell you exactly what the dog is like. You can always OFA the hips, elbows and Knees at any age so you end up with displasia
-
I had a German Shepard! One of the best/loyal dogs I ever had. I miss him very much. Good choice and good luck with finding one.
-
I have a German Shepard (mix idk what with) but mostly that, she is a very loving and awesome pet! Her bark scares the shit out of everyone. Great choice for a dog!
