❔Jammed or Broken❔
Forums › General Discussion › ❔Jammed or Broken❔-
Today in gym I broke/jammed my finger playing (you guessed it) basketball. It was a direct collision on my index finger👆 and I felt a pop in the joint when it hit. It rapidly became swollen but I was still able to move my finger and bend it around. I came home and applied ice right away. I'm hoping that I jammed the finger but there is always that air of uncertainty. I was thinking about visiting the doctor but my friends and family assured that it was just jammed. I have also researched online to spot the difference between a broken and jammed fingrer. What I am asking is if anyone else here has had a similar experience or if a doctor can give me some tips on how else to treat it. Help would be great!

You got insurance? go see the doc.
No insurance, tape it to a stick.

I did that in 7th grade. Broke the growth plate. Everyone told me it was just jammed and I'd be ok. Go to the dr. I have mad arthritis and lack of mobility in it.

First comment woot woot Jk but i think you could tell by how bad it hurt but never broke a finger so can't tell you sorry

I got a broken pinky finger(attack of the 3 yearold, accident of course). I could move it n didn't think it was broken also. Free medical proved otherwise, all depends if u got insurance. I've jammed it playin ball countless times too, if it's in a nuckle then it's probably just jammed. I'm no doc though!

You may laugh, but this actually works to immobilize it. I've broken a finger playing football. The coach taped two fingers together and sent me back on the field.Ojibwe wrote:

Incidentally, if you go see the doc, all he'll do is tape it to a stick. You can get a fancy finger stick from a cvs/walgreen's for about $6, but a couple of popsicle sticks work fine, and they come with a treat. You got insurance? go see the doc.

Two things to do ... If it is indeed broken and you have insurance go to the doctor just to have it X-ray there could be blood leaking inside witch would cause a bad blood infection ... Second what's refered as taping it to another finger is called budding ... It's a good idea but leave room for the swelling ... For now ice ice ice an keep it elevated above your chest .... That will be $50 😷

I smashed my finger on a 50ib bolder. I was demoing concrete and the bricked cracked in half and some how both pieces crush my pinky. This happened about 3 weeks ago and the bone is slightly shape diffrent and still hurts from little contact. Is it jammed or broken?

I do have insurance. I've been thinking about going to see the doctor 🏥 tomorrow to check it out just to be safe. -

It sounds like it's broken. Do you remember any swelling when it happened and how much? How much were you able to move your pinky and how far were you able to bend it. At the moment, my finger is also jammed and swollen. My advice is, if you can still move all the joints, it most likely isn't broken.

Yeah it most likely was broken. Especially since you said you are unable to return it to its normal form. Same thing with my pinky. It's fully healed and has no pain but it looks slightly bent outward compared to my other pinky. -
Tap the end of your finger lightly and then a bit harder. If you don't have a horrible pain shoot up your finger then it isn't broken. Trust me. Spring for the $5 at Walgreens and tape it up for a couple days. Alternate ice 20 minutes on, 20 off a few times a day.

Oh I forgot to add; I heard that you can also pull your finger (hehe) to help fix a jammed finger. Is this true?
