Who's done work on a trawler?
Forums › General Discussion › Who's done work on a trawler?-
For anyone who's been wondering where I've been the last week or so, I was generally out of phone reception: trawling the waterbody West of Tasmania known in Australia as the Southern Ocean.
Technically, it is part of the Indian Ocean, and also technically part of the Great Australian Bight. Any of these three names is right, but Southern Ocean is most common 😏I found the long hours and relatively hard work pretty tolerable - it was the isolation that got to me. I'm a real people person, and being so far from friends, family and (sad sigh) my girlfriend really irked me.
Thankfully, the weather was decent, and we were able to fill the hold and steam home two days early, so I shall be reunited with said people soon 😜. It was a once-off thing for me, and I doubt I'll ever get the chance again. All in all, it was a good experience.
Please, share your stories and/or thoughts! It really is an incredible job, and sadly, not alot of people ever get to try it.

P.S. if you don't know what a trawler is, please refrain from telling your stories. Lol.Kk✌

What did you trawl?

It's some kind of fishing boat according to Bing.

Ocean Perch, King Dory, Blue Grenadier (spelling?), Ling, Squid, and a whole sh!tload of Spotted something-or-other. Lol. I'm not much of a fisherman: most of what I know I learned in the past week or two haha ... as I said, it was an experience 😄What did you trawl?
We pulled up a live seal (he went back overboard, unharmed) and a dead, rotten whale. Damn that thing stank! Lol

I dont agree with them they ruin the ocean floor and kill billions of fish that just get thrown back dead

The seabed is just dirt and rock. Do you disagree with digging massive holes in the ground to get gold, coal, iron and other minerals out?
Do you disagree with logging operations to provide you with a house, paper and firewood?
Do you disagree with farming because farms are like big cow and sheep cages?
All those millions of fish are caught in large numbers because there are large numbers of them swimming around everywhere. There are rare species of fish, and fishing is restricted in the areas they populate.
Go disagree with things that are worth disagreeing with. 👊

Disregard the 👊 at the end of my message. You're too small to even bother ER-ing you 😏

Incase the previous post was not enough info, I agree with farming on land, and digging holes in the land and logging...
I dont agree with trawlers and other things that kill fish, i love fish and fishing although i mostly release my fish... -

I forgive you 😊 lol seriously, whatever you want to be passionate about, is your business. I dunno, just some people complain about things without thinking it through. I'm not saying you are. For all I know, you could have some PhD in Oceanology or something lol - I think you get my point though mate 😉👍♠Ƭϋʀғä♠ wrote:

That's awesome turfa! I am a massive fan of deadliest catch and always wondered if I had what it took to make the cut out there.

Who can I contact to take part in such a trawling experience?

Cheers mate. It was a great experience. I couldn't say whether you'd have what it takes though - I don't know you in RL lol. If you're a go-er, you'd probably get by just fine 😉That's awesome turfa! Lol I have absolutely no idea, in your case mate. Your turf are all overseas, so i assume you don't live in Australia lol. It was a job offer that I trialled and let go. As I said, great experience, but not a plausible career in my opinion 😏Who can I contact to take part in such a trawling experience?

Don't worry bloat your Shela was taken care of ... Jk happy fishing 🐟
As for the deadliest catch thing ... There's a big deference between the southern ocean and the bearing sea ... 👍
Welcome home safe -

I want to have the Southern Ocean experience. Can be pretty tough and rough! I followed Jessica's trip around the world and she ran in to some of the worst weather down there. So you just went to the harbour and signed up to a good looking trawler?Eurs Kweik wrote:

Fair enough. Nah, I got a phone number off a mate who'd done some work, so with a direct line to the harbour master, and a reference, I got in pretty easily. As far as I'm aware, it's generally quite difficult to get a go, so I was pretty lucky in that regard ☺♠Ƭϋʀғä♠ wrote:

Good hint man! I know a guy owning a couple of trawlers up here. Maybe give it a go on an Iceland trip. Must be pretty rough too!
